~ the goodbye ~
hockey fandom was a canadian and northeast-american tribe, not a turkish one. anyway, digiturk carried some winter olympics coverage every four years, an ankara hobby league or two existed for the diplomats' kids at the intercontinental ice rink, that was the whole footprint. real hockey lived across the atlantic, the video game version even more so.
i was 36 in october 2020 doing engineering work in ankara, still in the pandemic-lockdown work-from-home stretch, no console at home. nhl 21 shipped 16 october across ps4 and xbox one, ea vancouver out of burnaby as the studio, ea sports as the publisher. no pc release, no next-gen release, the game was locked to the previous console generation for its entire lifespan.
alex ovechkin on the cover was the marketing lead, second time in his career he had held that slot after nhl 07 way back at the start of his washington run. ovechkin was thirty-five in october 2020, still the top goal-scorer in the nhl, still the face of the capitals. anyway, for a franchise that had shipped a new numbered title every year since 1991, putting the same guy on the box twice fifteen years apart was a small nod to the length of his run.
this happened more in the north american internet than where i was. still, metacritic came in at around 72, mixed on ps4 and slightly better on xbox one. ign gave it a 6 out of 10 with the note that the game was at its best in world of chel or hut rush where the wacky end-to-end pace could actually breathe (or whatever it was called). the be-a-pro mode had been rebuilt with dialogue choices that affected a likability meter and a cinematic presentation layer bolted on to the career mode.
~ the chronicle ~
| Born | 16 october 2020 (ea vancouver, ps4/xbox one) |
|---|---|
| Peak | final ea sports title built on the ignite engine, 30th installment in the nhl series |
| Killed | 6 october 2025 (online servers off, offline modes still boot) |
| Lifespan | 4 years 11 months |
| Made by | ea vancouver (electronic arts, burnaby british columbia) |
| Killed by | ea rolling online-services shutdown, october 2025 batch with fifa 23 / nfs rivals / madden 22 |
~ what it was ~
world of chel was the ranked online layer that carried the game after launch, four submodes under it (ones, threes eliminator, drop-ins, clubs), ranked seasons across all of them with a bronze-to-elite tier ladder plus club finals championship banners. the hut side was ea's ultimate team clone for hockey, card packs stacked over a real-money coin economy.
this part you had to be inside the ecosystem for. anyway, the ignite engine had been ea sports' backbone since fifa 14 launched in 2013, seven years of sports titles across nhl / madden / ufc / fifa lines built on that base. nhl 21 was the last one, the frostbite migration had already caught madden 21 and fifa 21 the year before but the nhl team held onto ignite for one more cycle. for whatever reason, no other engine handoff on the ea sports side ran quite that long, the ignite lineage ended on a hockey disc that only shipped for previous-gen hardware.
~ the day it died ~
this part ea announced through the forum route more than a press release, anyway. the sunset notice went up on the ea nhl forum in mid 2025 with a 6 october kill date and the standard "low daily active player base" language attached. eight weeks of notice, no delisting on the same day, the game stayed for sale on ps store and xbox store past the shutdown.
nhl 21 was the first title in the october 2025 batch, kicked off the month before nfs rivals on the seventh, madden 22 on the twentieth, fifa 23 at the end on the thirtieth. all four ran on the ea online-services page as the october rolling wind-down. for what its worth, on the nhl side ea had already shipped nhl 22 in 2021, nhl 23 in 2022, nhl 24 in 2023, nhl 25 in 2024, nhl 26 in 2025, five sequels stacked on top of nhl 21 before ea killed its servers.
~ what replaced it ~
this part matters for the hockey continuity people, the rest of the audience just plays whatever the current nhl disc is. anyway, nhl 21 sits as the last ignite-engine ea sports title on the resume, the transition point between the 2013-2020 engine era and the frostbite era that took over after. no future release will ever be the last on ignite, the marker is permanent.
by 2026 the ea sports nhl line is on nhl 26, the ignite engine is a decade dead in the past on the fifa and madden and ufc sides, world of chel keeps running in the newer titles under the same name. nhl 21 is the disc still on people's shelves from the pandemic year, the one you cannot boot online anymore because the servers ran out their clock.
