Dungeon Runners

2007 - 2010
dead us
ncsoft's early free-to-play experiment. a diablo-shaped mmo with a self-parody streak and a $4.99 optional membership tier. lasted two and a half years before the studio called it unprofitable and turned it off on new year's day 2010.

~ the last words ~

dungeon runners sat in the part of internet history i can read about but cannot personally remember. north american f2p mmo, ncsoft austin, launched may 2007 when i was in university on ttnet dsl and playing sparse ultima online private servers rather than diablo-shaped instanced dungeons on a subscription tier.

the game had a specific joke about itself baked in. instead of a straight fantasy tone it leaned into parody. the loot names were absurd. tracy w. bush wrote the boss themes and pushed the score into black metal one fight, funk the next. joe madureira did concept art, which was a real credential for that era of comic-to-game crossover work.

the free tier played the base game. the four dollar ninety-nine cent monthly membership unlocked better drops and the "membership rooms" the free tier could not enter. it was one of the first western mmos to make the paid-vs-free split explicit inside the fiction of the game itself, and the joke around that split was half the point.

~ what really happened ~

producer stephen nichols wrote a short goodbye note in october 2009. the line everyone quoted was "the game just isn't profitable. and, the first rule of business is to be profitable!" he added that two of five developers had already left, and any real revenue-side rework would be expensive.

ncsoft compensated paid members with codes for city of heroes and guild wars: prophecies. the servers went down on 1 january 2010 and the website came off on 3 january. one of the earliest ncsoft f2p bets, closed before the western f2p boom that runescape and league of legends were about to sit on top of.

~ the legacy ~

the humor DNA showed up later in other places. torchlight and dungeon defenders both borrowed the "diablo but lighter and funnier" tone dungeon runners had staked out early. the technical bet on free-with-paid-tier looked correct in retrospect once league of legends normalized it two years later; ncsoft just could not carry the game long enough to be there for it.

the fan wiki and a few youtube uploads are what remain. no server emulator has surfaced, no re-release. the domain is parked. one of the many small ncsoft experiments that closed before the studio consolidated around guild wars and lineage as the survivors.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
