Monster Hunter Frontier Z
~ the obituary ~
Monster Hunter Frontier was locked at the payment layer rather than the download layer. There was no Turkish store page and no Turkish billing path, and for a while the Korean version wanted a Korean resident registration number before it would let you in at all. You could read about this game for twelve years without ever being able to legitimately give Capcom money for it, which is a different kind of absence from a game that simply never got translated.
Capcom launched it on Windows in Japan on 21 June 2007, at a point when Monster Hunter was still mostly a thing people did sitting next to each other with PSPs. Frontier was the version that assumed the other three hunters were strangers on a server somewhere, and it was the only one that ran on a subscription. You bought a Hunter Life package by the month, and the deeper content sat behind additional packages stacked on top of that.
It spread across hardware in a way no other entry in the series has. Windows first, then Xbox 360 on 24 June 2010, which sold ninety-three thousand copies in its opening week. The G expansion carried it onto PlayStation 3 and Wii U, with PS Vita alongside them and PlayStation 4 later still. At its widest the same live service was running on six platforms at once, which is an operational problem Capcom carried for years without much credit for it.

~ twelve years of updates ~
The content shipped as Seasons and then as Forwards, numbered updates that added monsters and armor on a schedule most subscription games never sustained. Frontier G arrived in 2013 and Frontier Z in 2016, each one effectively relaunching the game under a new name without asking anybody to start over.
Because it was separate from the mainline series it could take swings that Capcom would never risk on a numbered Monster Hunter. Frontier monsters got stranger and considerably more hostile than anything in the console games, and the endgame difficulty went places the mainline audience would have rejected outright. Twelve years of that produced a bestiary that exists nowhere else and cannot now be visited.
~ the wall around it ~
The overseas history is a short list of retreats. Korea closed in August 2011. Taiwan, which also covered Hong Kong and Macau, closed on 4 September 2012 as the last server outside Japan, then reopened around late 2014 under Capcom's own Taiwanese office with the G expansion. Nothing was ever released in the West, though rumors of it circulated for years and never resolved into anything.
Meanwhile the series it belonged to went the other way. Monster Hunter: World shipped worldwide in 2018 and sold tens of millions, and the whole argument for a subscription PC version confined to two markets evaporated in about a year. Frontier had been the online Monster Hunter for people who could not get one anywhere else. Then everyone could get one everywhere.
~ the day it died ~
Capcom announced the end on 19 June 2019, almost exactly twelve years after launch, and gave players six months of notice. The Japanese servers closed on 18 December 2019. The Taiwanese server, the last one anywhere, closed on 26 December.
There is no offline mode and no archived client that does anything useful, because every monster in it lived on a server that Capcom now owns the silence of. Private reconstruction efforts have been slowly bringing pieces of it back, which is currently the only way to see twelve years of a Monster Hunter game that officially no longer exists.
