JumpStart (online)

2009 - 2023
dead us
knowledge adventure took the jumpstart cd-rom brand from the nineties and rebuilt it as a browser mmo for grade-schoolers in 2009. it ran for fourteen years, mostly ignored by the adult internet, and then jumpstart games announced on 13 june 2023 that everything was closing except neopets. servers went dark two weeks later.

~ the goodbye ~

jumpstart sat in the part of internet history i can read about but cannot personally remember. it was a us edutainment brand for grade-schoolers, first a cd-rom line from knowledge adventure in the nineties, then a browser mmo aimed at the same demographic starting in 2009. i was 25 that year, on ttnet broadband in ankara, deep into engineering work. kids-mmo was not a category i had any reason to open in a browser tab.

knowledge adventure had been through a lot of owners by then. cuc international bought them in 1997, havas grabbed the software division from cendant for eight hundred million dollars in 1998, then vivendi sold it off in 2004 to an investor group. the rebrand to jumpstart games came in 2012, neopets got bought from viacom two years later, then the chinese publisher netdragon acquired the whole company in 2017 and kept the western operation going for another six years.

world of jumpstart, the actual mmo, went into beta on 1 december 2008 and launched publicly on 10 march 2009. flash-based, avatar-driven, quest-and-currency loop, standard for a browser-mmo of that era. a paid membership tier unlocked most of the actual content. really though, the pitch to parents was that math and reading modules sat inside the play loop. the pitch to kids was mostly the avatar and the pets.

~ the breakout ~

between roughly 2010 and 2015 the jumpstart online games shipped a small catalog of sub-worlds. a math blaster mmo, a school-of-dragons game licensed off the how to train your dragon film, a couple of star wars kids titles at some point. either way, the whole umbrella tucked under jumpstart.com and the connected accounts. the shift off flash in 2020 was rough on this class of game and most of the sub-worlds either ported to unity webgl or quietly closed.

this happened outside my radar entirely, the community around it was mostly kids and, later, adults nostalgic for the club-penguin-adjacent internet. really though, by 2020 those adults were the ones keeping wiki pages and youtube retrospectives alive. anyway, the games themselves kept running because netdragon was happy to leave them up as long as membership subscriptions covered hosting.

~ the postmortem ~

on 13 june 2023 jumpstart games posted a note on the corporate site saying it was ceasing operations and ending support for all games except neopets. no reason given. no acquirer named. servers went dark on 30 june at 2:59 am eastern time. the school of dragons subreddit and the jumpstart wiki captured the last-day screenshots, the last-hour goodbye party inside the games, the final music track playing when the login server stopped responding.

neopets was spun out to a separate entity that same month and is still online in 2026 under a different management structure. everything else in the portfolio was retired at the same moment. really though, for a company that had shipped edutainment software continuously since 1991, going quiet was the loudest exit possible.

~ the long tail ~

private-server projects for the older jumpstart mmos started appearing on discord and github within weeks of the shutdown. that is the same pattern club penguin's fans ran after disney closed the original in 2017, and toontown online's fans ran after disney closed that in 2013. some of these private servers will outlive the original by longer than the original was live. still, the licensed content (how to train your dragon, math blaster) will keep them permanently semi-legal, more archival than commercial. the actual jumpstart brand, forty years of edutainment marketing, sits on a corporate wikipedia page and nowhere else.
