Lookbook.nu

2008 - 2023
dead us
lookbook.nu was a pre-instagram street-style network where you posted a full-body photo of your outfit, tagged the pieces, and collected points called hype from other members. it started invite-only in 2008 and spent a few years quietly inventing what we now call influencer culture. then instagram made the same loop frictionless and everyone left. the site was simply inaccessible by september 2023, gone without much of a goodbye.

~ the last words ~

lookbook was for people who cared what they wore and wanted the internet to see it. that was never me. i was a computer engineer who owned about four shirts, and street-style photography sat about as far from my corner of the web as anything could get. so i am reconstructing this one from the outside.

it launched in 2008, built in a san francisco apartment by yuri lee and her co-founder jason su. the mechanic was clean. you posted a full-body photo of your outfit, tagged the pieces you were wearing, and other members gave you points called hype. enough hype and your look reached the front page.

it started invite-only, which made the early membership feel like a club, and even after it opened up the front page stayed the prize everyone chased. for a few years around 2010 it was one of the places where what we now call influencer culture was quietly being invented, before instagram existed to industrialize it. what i can see plainly is the shape of it, a network that trained a generation to photograph themselves head to toe and submit it for scoring, then got run over by the app that made the same loop effortless.

~ the early days ~

hype was the whole engine. it was a public score attached to your taste, and people optimized for it the way they later would for likes. lookbook produced actual careers, bloggers and models who turned a high hype count into work, back when the idea of getting paid to be well-dressed online still sounded a little absurd.

~ what really happened ~

instagram happened. the same behavior, posting your look for approval, moved to a platform with a camera in your pocket and everyone you knew already on it. lookbook did not get bought and shut in some dramatic deal. it just slowly stopped mattering, and by september 2023 the site was simply inaccessible, gone without much of a notice.

~ what replaced it ~

the word outlived the site. lookbook is still how the whole industry refers to a curated set of outfit images, said now by people who never knew there was a website by that name, run out of a soma apartment, that got there first.
