Não Salvo

2008 - 2020
dead brazil
for about a decade the default joke format of the brazilian internet came out of one blog run by one man in são paulo. maurício cid started it in 2008 as a bit about which celebrities were saved and which were not, and it grew into a network of twenty three sites with a reader army that would do almost anything if you titled the post correctly. the last new piece went up around the turn of 2020. the archive stayed online another year and a half before the server stopped answering, and naosalvo.com.br now forwards to cid's twitch channel.

~ the obituary ~

I do not read Portuguese and I have never been to Brazil, so this is a grave written from outside a language rather than outside a region. Worth saying up front, because what made Não Salvo matter is the part that does not translate. It ran on Brazilian slang and Brazilian television, in a register that dies the moment somebody explains it.

Maurício Cid started it in 2008 with a narrow premise: pick a celebrity, decide whether they were salvo or não salvo, saved or not saved. The premise lasted about as long as those premises usually do. Within a couple of years the blog had dropped the format and kept the voice, and the voice was the product. Jesus stayed on as the site mascot. Folha de S.Paulo named it best blog of 2010, and Youpix gave it blog of the year in 2011, which in the Brazilian web of that moment was roughly the whole set of available trophies.

The traffic came with a reader base that behaved less like an audience than a standing volunteer force. At its peak the inbox took two to three thousand messages a day. Cid built a network of twenty three sites around the main one and started a podcast called Não Ouvo in 2015. Web celebrities kept coming out of the submissions, among them Bonde das Maravilhas and MC Maromba, who went from a reader link to a national name without passing through any traditional medium on the way.

~ desafio aceito ~

The section that defined the place was Desafios Aceitos, accepted challenges. Readers were told to go do something absurd and photograph it, and thousands of them did, sending the results back through Twitter and Facebook. It was a comment section with a work order attached. Most humor sites of the era wanted you to laugh and leave. This one wanted you to go outside first.

The other running bit was Rússia brasileira, Brazilian Russia, which held that the state of Paraná generated surreal video at a rate otherwise seen only in Russian dashcam footage. A joke like that only works if the audience is large enough to keep feeding it, which is the whole story of the blog in one recurring tag.

~ how it stopped ~

There was no farewell post and no announcement, which makes the ending readable only through the archive. The homepage captured on 4 January 2020 and the homepage captured on 5 April 2020 lead with the same item, episode 209 of the podcast, so the last new thing went up somewhere around the turn of that year. The site kept serving its back catalog through 2020 and into 2021, then the origin server started returning errors in May 2021 and by that August there was nothing behind the address at all.

~ where cid went ~

naosalvo.com.br still resolves. It forwards to twitch.tv/cidcidoso, where Maurício Cid streams IRL, walking around São Paulo with a camera. He did not quit the internet or lose the audience. He moved to the format that replaced blogs, and left the redirect in place as the only obituary the blog ever got.
