~ the obituary ~

i missed arkham exchange. it lasted about fourteen months from launch to shutdown, all of which fell inside the 2024-2025 stretch where i was not actively watching crypto exchange launches. derivatives trading on a new venue from a blockchain analytics company was a small story unless you were already inside the on-chain analytics audience that arkham had built out as a brand.

arkham intelligence, the parent, was founded in 2020 as an analytics platform for tracking on-chain activity. the product gave you the ability to label wallet addresses, follow whale movements and connect on-chain identities across chains. it became the standard tool for the cohort of crypto twitter users who tracked exchange wallets and large transfers. the exchange subsidiary was an attempt to convert that analytics audience into a trading customer base.

the exchange launched as a derivatives platform in october 2024. it expanded into us spot trading in early 2025. in late 2025 it added a mobile app and the moonpay fiat onramp partnership. every move was textbook for a crypto exchange in 2024-2025. none of it produced the trading volume the venture needed.

on 15 december 2025 arkham intelligence announced the exchange was shutting down. anyway, trading volume in the previous 24 hours had reportedly been under $620,000, which is a number you can hit at a tiny retail venue, not at one positioned as a binance competitor. users were given until 31 january 2026 to withdraw funds. the core analytics product and the arkm token continued operating, separate from the exchange wind-down.

arkham intelligence in 2023 to 2024 had a moment of being the most-talked-about crypto analytics product. the dox feature, which paid bounties for naming the people behind specific wallets, was controversial and generated a lot of attention. the arkm token launched in mid-2023 and was used for paying for analytics queries. the platform had real product fit inside the on-chain analytics niche.

the exchange was the obvious next move, on paper. you take the analytics audience. you give them a trading venue where they can act on the data they are looking at, letting them trade against the wallet movements they are tracking. the cross-sell looked clean in a slide. in practice the audience for analytics and the audience for derivatives are not the same people, even when they overlap.

~ what killed it ~

the crypto exchange business has a hard floor on the volume you need to run. liquidity attracts liquidity. without enough order flow you cannot offer competitive spreads, and without competitive spreads the sophisticated traders go elsewhere. arkham could not break that loop in fourteen months.

the market context did not help. by late 2025 the crypto retail trading audience was concentrated on binance, coinbase, kraken, and a couple of regional venues. new exchanges were closing more than they were launching. arkham came in late, with a thin differentiator, and the analytics-tracking pitch did not translate into trading customers. the parent company shut the experiment cleanly rather than letting it bleed.
