~ the obit ~
schülerVZ was a german-language social network for high-school students. it never reached turkey at meaningful scale, the platform was a DACH-only product by design with email verification tied to school accounts in germany plus austria and switzerland. i was 23 in 2007 and on msn anyway, watching the european facebook clones from the same distance i watched studiVZ and hyves.
the launch was february 2007, about six weeks after holtzbrinck publishing bought studiVZ for 85 million euro. the strategy was clear: studiVZ had the universities, schülerVZ would take the secondary schools, meinVZ would mop up everyone else. all three ran on the same backend. the shared verb was "gruscheln", a portmanteau of greet and cuddle, which served the same role as facebook's poke and was famous enough to land in the duden a couple of years later.
by 2009 schülerVZ had 5.4 million members. that was near-total saturation of german-speaking secondary-school students, the kind of footprint where a teacher could assume their class was already on the platform. the network had its own moderation tier because the under-18 base required it, with reporting workflows and adult-account exclusion that the parent studiVZ did not need.
the slide started in 2010. facebook had localized into german in september 2008 and the migration took eighteen months to begin showing up in the user counts. by end of 2010 the three VZ networks had dropped from 15 million combined to 12 million. by december 2012 it was 1.6 million. the brand had become a punchline at every german school within two academic years.

~ what made it specifically schueler ~
the parent VZ network had been built for university students. schülerVZ inherited the same profile-page logic and friend graph, layered moderation rules on top for the under-18 audience. a "rumours" feed got pulled after parent complaints. photo albums had age-gated visibility from launch. the part that gave teachers fits was a feature called "gruppen" where students organized by school and grade, and the gruppen were not always supervised.
schülerVZ also had two security failures that hit the press. in october 2009 a scraper pulled profile data on around 1.6 million members and posted it. in 2010 a similar incident exposed another 1.6 million records. each one cost the platform a wave of users who had not yet moved to facebook anyway and now had a reason.
~ how it actually ended ~
the official announcement came in march 2013. the press release used the phrase "vollständig und unwiederbringlich gelöscht" for what would happen to user data on the cutoff. that was honest. there was no migration path and no archive download tool. there was also no successor product owned by the same operator that schülerVZ accounts could move into. on april 30 2013 the servers went dark, profile data was wiped, the domain redirected to a goodbye page for a while before pointing at studiVZ.
studiVZ and meinVZ hung on for almost a decade more, sold off to momentous entertainment in 2017 and finally shut down in march 2022. schülerVZ never made it that far, the under-18 audience was the first to leave and the first to be cut loose. for a stretch of three years it had been the default social network of an entire age cohort in germany. the cohort grew up and moved to facebook, then later moved off facebook again. schülerVZ was the bridge none of them remember crossing.
