forty million people in thailand used it, which in a country of seventy million is most of the internet. line tv arrived on android on 28 october 2014 and gave away thai drama for free, paid for by advertising. it became the home screen for the boys love series that thailand was about to export to the entire world. 2gether passed a hundred million views on it inside two months of 2020. the licensing bills never stopped growing and the ad money stopped, and on 29 november 2021 line gave six weeks of notice. service ended at noon on 31 december. only the taiwanese arm was spared.

~ the last words ~

LINE TV went live on Android in Thailand on 28 October 2014. Then iOS four weeks later, and the web in December. LINE Corporation held a formal launch the following February and told the Bangkok Post that Thailand was the global debut market for the service, which was true in the sense that mattered: Thailand was LINE's biggest market outside Japan, with 33 million active users on the messenger at the time. The video service was free and funded by advertising, sitting one tap away from an app most of the country already had open.

What it became was the place Thai television lived on the internet. Not a Netflix competitor by design and never a subscription business, but the catch-up platform for Thai channels and, increasingly, the first home of the series being made for streaming rather than broadcast. By 2019 it had 40 million users in a country of about seventy million, and the lockdown year pushed viewing up by more than 45 percent on top of that.

The part of this that traveled was Thai boys love drama, and it traveled further than anything LINE built. Series like 2gether went out on LINE TV in Thailand and reached the rest of the world through YouTube clips and fan subtitles, picking up audiences in countries that had no idea what platform the show was actually on. 2gether passed 100 million views on LINE TV by 19 April 2020, about eight weeks after its premiere. Three months past the finale the combined YouTube and LINE TV count was 540 million.

That is the distance here, and it is not the usual geographic kind. Thai BL is one of the few television phenomena of the last decade to spread genuinely worldwide from outside the English-speaking industry, and the service carrying it at home was invisible from anywhere else. Plenty of people who can name the shows have never heard the name of the platform that paid for them.

~ the arithmetic of free ~

LINE's notice on 29 November 2021 said very little. It thanked viewers and producers, then mentioned an internal restructuring alongside the observation that change happens constantly. No cause was named. The Thai trade press was blunter about it. Bangkok Post ran the closure under intense competition and rising costs, and mgronline laid out the mechanism: licensing fees for content were the platform's main expense, and a free service with only advertising behind it could not keep paying them.

The competition it names is specific. WeTV, Viu, iQIYI and AIS Play were all buying Thai content by then, and Netflix had started commissioning it. When four well-funded rivals bid for the same licenses, the price of being the free option goes up every year while the revenue per viewer stays flat. Pandemic advertising budgets falling at the same moment closed the gap from the other side.

~ what closed, and where ~

The shutdown was much larger than Thailand. Nikkei reported LINE withdrawing the video service from 21 countries and territories, across Southeast Asia plus markets as far out as South America and India. Taiwan was the single exception, and it is still running: linetv.tw answers today, operated by Choco Media, selling VIP subscriptions under a 2026 copyright line. Japan never had a consumer LINE TV at all.

Service in Thailand stopped at noon on 31 December 2021. English Wikipedia says the original programming moved to LINE Today's TV tab, though no Thai source confirms a specific destination for the catalog, and for a library largely made of licensed broadcast content there may not have been one.

~ nothing to visit ~

The address tv.line.me does not resolve. Neither does linetv.th. Both are gone at the DNS level rather than parked or redirected, so there is no farewell page to find and no squatter to report. The parent domain line.me resolves perfectly well, as it should, since LINE is still the messenger 85 percent of Thai internet users open every day. The company kept the part with the network effect and let the television go.
