~ how it landed ~
hooq never reached turkey at meaningful scale. honestly, it was a southeast asia svod product built for prepaid telco bundle markets where smartphone-first viewing dominated and household broadband was the exception rather than the rule. singtel ran it through their consumer business unit. by '26 the brand is a footnote in svod history but at peak it carried hollywood and asian content across five markets and was paid for largely through prepaid telco minutes (or whatever the local prepaid term was).
look, hooq was established 30 january '15 as a joint venture with singtel at 65%, sony pictures at 17.5%, warner bros at 17.5%. the parent valuation came in at 420 million usd in march '15. the launch geography was singapore, the philippines, thailand, indonesia and india across '15 and '16, with content libraries customized per market. the price point was a few usd a month bundled into the singtel-affiliated telco bill on each market, well below the netflix tier.
the catalog ran hollywood studio titles from sony and warner plus regional content licensed locally per market. the differentiator vs netflix was telco billing integration plus offline download support engineered for inconsistent mobile bandwidth. the strategic bet was that prepaid-billed smartphone-first svod could undercut netflix in markets where netflix's payment rails (credit card) excluded most of the addressable audience.

| Killed | 30 April 2020 after the 27 March 2020 liquidation filing in Singapore |
| Lifespan | about five years and three months from incorporation to shutdown |
| Made by | Singtel as majority owner, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros as minority partners |
| Killed by | hollywood content cost it could not amortize across five mid-tier markets, plus Netflix and Disney+ arrival |
~ what killed it ~
the bet did not pay off. honestly, singtel disclosed cumulative losses on hooq of around 221 million usd by the time the liquidation petition went in. the operating challenge was content cost. hollywood studio licensing did not scale down per market the way the price point did. netflix arrived in the same markets between '16 and '18 with content investment that hooq could not match. disney+ launched its first asian market (singapore) in '20 with a deeper bench. iflix (a competitor backed by malaysian capital) hit similar economics from the other side.
27 march '20 hooq pte ltd filed for liquidation in singapore. operations wound down across april. 30 april '20 was the final shutdown date. 240 staff lost their jobs in the process. coupang (the korean e-commerce operator) acquired hooq's software assets in july '20 to fold into coupang play, and the original product disappeared as a consumer brand.
~ what came after ~
iflix went into a parallel liquidation that same year and got bought by tencent for the same kind of pennies-on-the-dollar number (asset value, not going concern). the sea-svod-only model died with both of them. netflix and disney+ inherited the remaining svod audience in those five markets. local players (viu in particular) picked up the regional-content piece that hooq had tried to run alongside hollywood. the joint-venture structure where two studios and one telco co-owned a regional svod player produced exactly two notable attempts in the 2010s (hooq plus joost from a decade earlier) and zero notable successes.
