In September 2020 Facebook reported that Watch had more than 1.25 billion monthly visitors, which was forty-six percent of everybody on Facebook. Now name a show.

The number is real and it means close to nothing, because Watch was a tab and not a destination. A destination is somewhere you decided to go. A tab is somewhere the layout put you, and a company that owns the layout can generate a billion visitors to anything it wants by moving a button. Facebook had spent years learning that lesson on the other side, watching people arrive somewhere by accident and calling it demand.

I cannot honestly tell you whether I ever used this, and neither can most of that 1.25 billion, which is the whole condition of the product. It was announced on 9 August 2017, opened to a small slice of American users the next day, reached everyone in the US by the end of that month and went worldwide on 30 August 2018. At no point in that rollout did anybody have to choose it.

The economics were built to pull creators off YouTube. Producers kept 55 percent of ad-break revenue and Facebook kept 45, which was deliberately matched to YouTube's split. Short-form episodes started at ten to forty thousand dollars each and rose toward seventy thousand on renewal. Television-length series ran from a quarter of a million up past a million an episode. The Wall Street Journal reported in September 2017 that the company was willing to spend up to a billion dollars on original video through 2018, and it did.

The analysts were not restrained about it. Morgan Stanley put Watch at $565 million of revenue by the end of 2018. Jefferies said it could reach twelve billion dollars a year by 2022. In 2022 the actual event was that Facebook quietly discontinued the Watch apps for television sets.

Facebook also broke its own long-standing rule for it. The company had refused pre-roll advertising for years on the grounds that it drove people away, then lifted the ban in December 2017 specifically to support Watch, while pushing mid-roll ads later into videos so they would stop appearing twenty seconds into a ninety second clip.

There was one genuine hit and it is the answer to the question at the top. Red Table Talk, the interview show Jada Pinkett Smith made with her mother and daughter, launched in May 2018, won a Daytime Emmy in 2021 and built an audience of eleven million followers. On 26 April 2023 Meta shut down the group that made the originals, Mina Lefevre left as head of development, and none of the shows were renewed. Red Table Talk went with the rest of them.

Nothing about that day was a surprise. Meta had spent the previous eighteen months rebuilding itself around short vertical video because TikTok had made every other format look like homework. Watch had been designed in 2017 to take a fight to YouTube, and it lost to a company that was not in the room when it was drawn up.

~ what it became ~

Watch also ran licensed catalog, which is the part that turns up in searches now. In November 2018 Facebook did a deal with 20th Century Fox Television to stream Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, so for a while the archive of a 1997 WB show lived inside a video tab on a social network. Even after the originals group was gone, uploads kept landing under the Watch name, including a 2024 documentary about A Boogie wit da Hoodie.

As of 2025 facebook.com/watch no longer resolves to anything of its own. It forwards to Reels. A billion and a quarter monthly visitors turned out to be an address, not an audience, and the address got reassigned.
