Hydra Market

2015 - 2022
dead europe
hydra was the largest darknet market ever built and almost nobody outside the russian-speaking internet ever saw it. it ran from 2015 to april 2022 and reached seventeen million customer accounts against nineteen thousand sellers, with sales passing a billion dollars in 2020 alone. the thing that made it different was physical: nothing was mailed. couriers buried packages and sent you coordinates. german federal police took the servers on 5 april 2022 and a moscow court gave its alleged head a life sentence two and a half years later.

~ the last words ~

every other market in this part of the archive ended at a mailbox. you ordered, somebody packed an envelope, a postal service carried it and the whole model depended on customs being too busy to look. hydra is the one that employed people to go outside instead.

it opened in 2015 as a russian-language site on tor, and by the time german police switched it off it had been running for about seven years. seventeen million customer accounts sat against nineteen thousand seller accounts. sales passed a billion dollars in 2020 by themselves, and researchers who counted the whole category found hydra taking the overwhelming majority of it, which makes this the largest thing of its kind that has ever existed.

it also barely registered in english. the interface was russian, the payouts were in rubles, and the courier network only worked in cities where the operation had people. i read about it the way i read about weather in a country i have never visited, which is to say after the fact and from other people's reporting.

the market was not one shop. sellers rented storefronts inside it and hydra took a cut of everything, closer to a landlord than a vendor. that structure is also why the name was chosen. cut off a head and two grow back, which turned out to be true of the category and not of the site.

~ how a package changed hands ~

the russian word is klad, meaning buried treasure, and the people who did the work were called kladmen. you paid online, and somewhere in your city a courier had already hidden the package under a stairwell or in a patch of park and logged the gps position. what you received was a set of coordinates and sometimes a photograph.

this removed the two weakest points in the mail model at once. no address was written down anywhere and no parcel crossed a border. it also created an entire labor force at the bottom, thousands of people doing the physically dangerous part for a few hundred dollars a day, who were the ones getting arrested while the market itself stayed untouchable.

~ the ruble problem ~

sellers were paid in cryptocurrency and lived in a country where turning cryptocurrency into cash was genuinely hard. hydra solved that in-house. it ran mixing services to break the chain of transactions and it ran exchange services to get money out in rubles, which meant it was a bank as much as a market.

that is what the treasury department reached for on the day of the takedown, sanctioning hydra alongside the exchange garantex and adding more than a hundred cryptocurrency addresses to the list. the drugs made the headlines. the laundering plumbing underneath is why an american agency cared about a russian-language site it could not otherwise touch.

~ the seizure and after ~

on 5 april 2022 the bundeskriminalamt announced that it had taken hydra's server infrastructure, located in germany, along with 543 bitcoin worth about twenty-five million dollars at that morning's price. the investigation had been running since august 2021 with american agencies alongside. the same day the justice department unsealed an indictment of dmitry pavlov, a russian who had operated the hosting company that kept the servers up.

pavlov was never handed over. what happened instead is that russia ran its own case: on 2 december 2024 a court outside moscow gave stanislav moiseyev a life sentence for organizing the operation, with fifteen others receiving between eight and twenty-three years. the market's users had already scattered into a set of successor sites that spent the following year attacking each other over the inheritance.
