AlphaBay
~ the obit ~
in july 2017 alphabay reached me as a headline, which is how it reached almost everyone. i was thirty-three, writing code in ankara, and the darknet was something i understood in the abstract without ever having a reason to open it. the name only became famous at the exact moment it stopped existing.
it went live in december 2014, run by a canadian named alexandre cazes under the handle alpha02. silk road had been seized a year earlier and its buyers had scattered across a dozen smaller sites that kept collapsing or absconding with deposits. alphabay collected them. it sat on tor and took payment in bitcoin, later adding monero. funds went into escrow until the buyer confirmed delivery, and vendors carried public ratings, the same machinery any ordinary marketplace of that period ran.
by mid 2017 it was the largest thing of its kind that had ever operated. the fbi put it at ten times the size of silk road, roughly 200,000 users against 40,000 vendors. a quarter of a million drug listings sat behind the front page. it had a moderated forum and a public relations account on reddit. it looked less like a hidden service than like a company.
then it died in four days. on 4 july 2017 the site stopped answering, and buyers assumed the usual exit scam. on 5 july thai police arrested cazes at his house in bangkok while he was logged in as an administrator, which handed investigators an unlocked laptop with the server list open on it. he was found dead in his cell on 12 july, ruled a suicide by the thai authorities. the justice department announced the whole thing on 20 july, by which point the second half of the plan had already worked.

~ the rise ~
what alphabay actually solved was trust. anonymous strangers cannot sue each other, so every market of this kind lives or dies on whether people believe the escrow will pay out. cazes ran his like an operator who intended to stay, with a paid bug bounty and published rules about what vendors could not list. the growth after silk road was not a mystery. it was the only address that stayed up.
~ the takedown ~
the seizure was not the clever part. dutch police had quietly taken over hansa, the second-largest market, a month earlier and were running it as a live honeypot. when alphabay vanished, its displaced sellers and buyers migrated en masse to hansa, straight into a site the police already controlled and were logging. the dutch collected usernames and addresses for weeks before closing it too. two markets, one operation, and the users delivered themselves.
~ the long tail ~
in august 2021 the name came back. someone calling themselves desnake, claiming to have been alphabay's original security administrator, relaunched the market and spent two years trying to rebuild the reputation. it never got close. by early 2023 the site had gone into lockdown over an unsigned warrant canary, desnake stopped posting, and the second alphabay quietly ceased to exist. the pattern that outlived it is duller than the story: markets keep reappearing, police keep taking them, and the interval between the two keeps shortening.
