holoearth

2022 - 2026

three point one nine nine billion yen is what cover wrote off when it closed holoearth at nine in the evening on a sunday in june 2026. the hololive metaverse had been open to the public since late 2022 and had only been a finished 1.0 for fourteen months. the reason cover gave was a change of development policy, which is the corporate way of saying the money was going somewhere else. the vtubers whose faces had sold the place streamed themselves standing in it while it closed.

~ the last words ~

holoearth was a virtual world built by Cover Corporation, the Japanese company behind the hololive VTuber agency. The premise was straightforward enough as business logic: Cover's talents had made the company large on a platform it did not own, and holoearth was to be a persistent place that it did own, with avatars and an economy of its own. Cover began talking about it in 2021, opened it to the public in pieces from 2022, and declared it finished on 24 April 2025. It closed at nine in the evening on Sunday 28 June 2026.

The public history starts on 24 November 2022, when Cover put out what it called the communication lobby as a Windows download. The framing was unusual and Cover stated it plainly: there would be no test period, and the thing would be verified while it ran. That decision shaped everything after it. Across the next twenty-nine months the product sat in a condition where no outside observer could say whether it had launched, which makes the shutdown arithmetic contested depending on where you start counting.

Version 1.0.0 arrived on 24 April 2025 and brought the piece that was supposed to make it a world rather than a lobby, a marketplace where users could build items and sell them for the in-world currency. That piece matters, because once people are selling things to each other the platform has made them a promise about continuity. Fourteen months later the promise expired. Cover announced the closure on 14 May 2026 and stopped selling paid holocoins the same day. The marketplace went dark on 3 June at 23:59, and a refund desk stayed open until noon on 30 September.

You had to already be watching for any of this to land. The proposition was a place to stand near specific streamers whose schedules you already had memorized, in Japanese, on a Windows client. That is a narrow door by design, and I was on the outside of it. I have never followed a hololive channel.

~ what you could actually do in it ~

Less than the word metaverse implies, which was true of every product that used the word. The lobby was a space you walked an avatar around, with voice chat and events timed to hololive's broadcast calendar. The later builds added the island-building and gathering loop that most of these worlds end up with, plus avatar creation that got meaningfully better over time, including the December 2022 update that finally allowed male avatars.

The marketplace was the real argument. Letting users author and sell items turns a venue into something with a labor market attached, and it is the feature that separates a world people live in from a room people visit. holoearth got there in April 2025 and had a year and two months to find out whether it worked.

~ the write-off ~

Cover booked a special loss of 3,199,000,000 yen in the fiscal year ending March 2026, impairing the related software assets in full. The stated cause was the pivot in development policy together with the end of the current service. A full impairment is an accounting judgment with no ambiguity in it: the company is saying the asset will not generate future cash, so its carrying value goes to zero in one stroke.

That number is the most honest document holoearth produced. Shutdown notices are written to be read by users and they are careful and warm. An impairment line is written to be read by auditors, and it says the thing the notice cannot, which is that an entire development program produced an asset the company valued at nothing on the way out.

~ the last night ~

On the final evening the talents logged in. Usada Pekora and Shirakami Fubuki were among the hololive members who streamed themselves inside holoearth as the clock ran down to 21:00, which means the closure of the world was itself content on the platform the world had been built to escape. Cover's talents watched Cover's metaverse end, live, on YouTube.
