Ameba Pigg

2009 - 2019
dead asia
ameba pigg was japan's biggest virtual community that nobody outside japan knew about. it ran on flash. ten million people made an avatar there and furnished a virtual room in pastel rgb. when adobe announced the end of flash, cyberagent put the pc version on a december 2019 sunset clock. the smartphone version limped on with fewer features.

~ the obituary ~

ameba pigg launched on february 19 2009 as a 3d avatar community inside cyberagent's larger ameba blogging portal. you made a chibi-styled character and walked it around themed rooms, and you furnished it with clothes and furniture bought in a paid currency called ameba gold. it was a virtual world built for japanese teenagers and twentysomething women, played mostly from desktops at home, on the same long-running ameba account people already used for blogs and games. by november 2011 the user count was past ten million and cyberagent was making roughly 600 million yen a month from in-app sales.

an international version called ameba pico shipped in march 2010 and ran on facebook for two and a half years. cyberagent closed pico on december 17 2012 with a single line about insufficient developer resources. the japanese version kept running for another seven years.

the actual cause of death was flash. adobe announced in 2017 that flash would be discontinued at the end of 2020, and the pigg client had been a flash app since 2009. cyberagent moved a stripped-down version to smartphones earlier in the decade, but the pc version was where the social culture lived, and rewriting that for a flashless web was not on the company's roadmap. the pc shutdown happened on december 2 2019. the smartphone version stayed around as a smaller product without the same lobby-and-room density.

~ what it actually was ~

ameba pigg was something between a chat room and a dollhouse. you parked your avatar in a public square and watched other people's avatars walk in and emote, then went home to a private apartment you decorated with paid furniture. there were fishing minigames and brand-partnership rooms with limited-edition outfits tied to running anime promotions. it sat in the same shape as habbo hotel and smallworlds, but with japan-specific styling that did not really export.

~ the inheritance ~

ameba pigg sat in the part of japanese internet history i can read about but cannot personally remember. it was a regional teen-girl product on a regional blog portal, running on a flash client tied to a paid-currency model that needed a japanese mobile-carrier billing relationship to settle cleanly. the cultural niche it filled later moved to twitter and to line, and the avatar-decoration loop moved to gacha apps that did not need a 3d room around them. cyberagent itself stayed alive on the mobile-games side. ameba pigg was the part of the company that nobody under twenty needed anymore by 2019.
