Politics.ie

2003 - 2025
dead europe
david cochrane started politics.ie in 2003 and it became the place irish political argument happened outside the newspapers, in english and in irish, through a banking collapse and the bailout that followed it. it won best discussion forum at the irish web awards in 2011 and it was already breaking by 2018, when the front end and the forum software stopped talking to each other properly and never fully recovered. the domain lapsed on july 15, 2025. a bulgarian registrar picked the name up in october. twenty-two years of a country's political arguments went out with an unpaid renewal.

~ the obituary ~

the forums i lived in were turkish and mostly about hardware. donanimhaber, frmtr, signature blocks listing whatever was in the case that month. politics was something you argued about in the off-topic subforum after the specs were settled, never the whole reason a site existed.

politics.ie was built the other way round. one country, one subject, twenty-two years. it is the shape of forum that basically stopped being made after 2010, when national political argument moved onto platforms owned elsewhere, and it kept running for fifteen years past the point where that was still a normal thing to do.

david cochrane started it in 2003. it ran in english and in irish, and it covered the dail, the parties, the local races, and the long stretch of national self-examination that followed 2008. journalists read it. politicians read it, and some of them posted, which is where a lot of its usefulness and most of its legal exposure came from.

~ the climb ~

its best years line up with ireland's worst. the property collapse, the guarantee, the bailout in november 2010, the general election that followed: all of it went through the forum in real time, at a length and a speed no newspaper letters page could match. it took best discussion forum at the irish web awards in 2011, which was the peak of both the site and the format.

the legal question arrived early, as it does for any forum that lets the public write about named people. an auctioneer, michael daly, took an action against cochrane over material posted on the site. an injunction was granted, and cochrane accepted that the content was inaccurate without admitting liability. it is the standard bind of running an open board about a small country: everyone in the thread knows everyone in the thread.

~ the slide ~

cochrane resigned as a director of pie media ltd, the company behind the site, in august 2012. pie media itself was dissolved on april 22, 2015. the forum kept running after both, which is its own kind of tell, since a site with no company behind it is a site being carried by whoever still has the passwords.

the technical decay started in july 2018 with an outage that lasted into august, and it never really stopped after that. in february 2019 the link between the public site and the forum software broke badly enough that the whole thing had to be pieced back together. from then on it was a board running on unpatched software with no organization funding the patching.

~ the day it died ~

there was no announcement. the domain registration for politics.ie expired on july 15, 2025 and was not renewed. the site stayed reachable for a few weeks on residual dns, and the wayback machine caught it one last time on august 9. after that the name was simply not resolving. on october 2, 2025 a bulgarian registrar registered it, which is what happens to any expired domain with enough history to be worth reselling.

an unrenewed domain is the quietest death a website gets. no shutdown post, no thirty-day window to save your threads. twenty-two years of one country arguing with itself sat on a server that stopped being paid for, and whether that was a decision or an oversight is not recorded anywhere, because the person who would have written it down had already stepped away a decade earlier.
