2007 - 2022

a webmaster signing himself adi opened an indonesian christian message board on 9 december 2007 and kept it alive for fifteen years, moderated by volunteers drawn from several protestant denominations, with no church paying for any of it. the indonesian wikipedia entry gives the cause as a membership that kept shrinking. the archive agrees on the year: the last readable front page is 2 october 2022, and the origin server stopped answering cloudflare in june 2024.

~ the goodbye ~

ForumKristen.com went up on 9 December 2007 and described its own purpose without any corporate throat-clearing: a place for Indonesian Christians to swap thoughts and strengthen one another in faith. It ran independently, and the Indonesian Wikipedia entry is careful to say twice that no church and no mission agency stood behind it.

It ran on a webmaster who went by Adi and a moderation group called the FK Team, pulled from several Protestant denominations at once. That last detail is the interesting one. Indonesia's Protestant landscape is not a single thing, and running one board across it means a mod team that has to agree on what gets deleted while disagreeing about most of the things being posted.

It also stayed open to people who were not Christians at all, as long as they were there to read about the teachings. A board that sets that rule in 2007 and is still enforcing it in 2020 has made a choice about what it is for, and the choice is harder than it sounds.

I had no reason to be on an Indonesian forum in any year of my life, and the only reason I know this one existed is that its domain turned up on a list of hostnames that had stopped resolving. The research here is entirely secondhand, which in this case means an encyclopedia entry in a language I do not read and a server's error codes.

The software history is its own record of how long this went on. By the end the board was running Discourse 2.8, which is modern, well after the phpBB generation that most forums of its vintage died on. Somebody was doing migrations. Somebody kept the thing patched across fifteen years of a job that pays nothing.

Indonesian Wikipedia gives the cause in nine words: the number of users declined, so it closed in 2022. There is no farewell letter anywhere, and no final thread that anyone thought to archive.

~ what the origin stopped answering ~

The server tells the rest. The Internet Archive's last successful capture of the front page is 2 October 2022, a 4,391-byte Discourse shell still carrying the site's own title and its tagline about meeting up and learning scripture. After that the crawler gets redirects through the winter, then a run of 403s across 2023, which is Cloudflare refusing the archiver rather than the site being gone.

The real ending is in the error numbers. From 21 June 2024 every capture is a 525, which means Cloudflare could reach the edge and the origin behind it would not complete a handshake. Today it answers 521: no origin at all. The board closed in 2022, the domain kept pointing at a machine for another eighteen months, and then the machine stopped. Fifteen years of conversation about faith now exist as a status code.
