~ the eulogy ~
hbo now was a us-only product at the licensing layer. the terms of service explicitly forbid using a vpn to access it from outside the country. that meant for most of the world it was a thing you read about, not a thing you could subscribe to. the international cluster of game of thrones piracy through 2019 was the predictable consequence of a global hit show being sold through an app that did not exist outside of north america.
the product launched on april 7 2015, timed to the game of thrones season five premiere. it was announced at an apple event in march of that year and shipped as an apple-tv-and-ios exclusive for the first three months. the package was fifteen dollars a month with no cable subscription required, and the catalog matched the linear network's library plus current originals. development was actually contracted out to major league baseball advanced media, the same team that had built mlb.tv, because hbo's internal engineering was not set up to ship a consumer streaming product on a fixed deadline.
hbo now reached about one million paying users by july 2015. by early 2018 the number was around five million. that was the peak. it kept running for two more years sitting next to hbo go, the cable-tied app, and the two apps having overlapping catalogs and different login systems was confusing for everyone including hbo. in may 2020 warner consolidated both products into hbo max, and the now brand was retired by december.

~ how it landed ~
the apple exclusive period was a deliberate marketing move. hbo wanted the launch to be associated with the apple tv hardware refresh that spring, and apple wanted a marquee streaming service to anchor the announcement. the deal locked out everyone else for ninety days. when the exclusive ended hbo now arrived on android and the web at roughly the same time, with chromecast support arriving shortly after.
~ the unraveling ~
five million subscribers sounds like a successful product and was nowhere near where hbo wanted to be. netflix at the same time was crossing one hundred million globally. hbo's premium-tier no-ads pricing was selling to a us cordcutter market that had already mostly cut. the international expansion never came under the hbo now brand. warner's path forward was either to consolidate the two apps and rebrand, or to keep losing the framing war.
~ what it became ~
hbo max launched on may 27 2020 and was renamed simply max in 2023 before reverting to hbo max in 2025. the brand has been renamed twice in five years, which is a metric that says something about how often warner discovery thinks about how to package the same library. hbo now was the company's first attempt at being a software product without the cable middleman. the lessons stuck on the subscriber-acquisition side but not on the brand-naming side.
