Crackle

2007 - 2024
dead us
crackle was the avod that existed before avod was a category. sony's free ad-supported library, born from grouper networks in 2006, rebranded crackle in july 2007. it produced "comedians in cars getting coffee" and a few other originals before sony lost interest and offloaded the majority stake to chicken soup for the soul in 2019. chicken soup filed chapter 11 in june 2024.

~ the eulogy ~

crackle was a us-only product at the licensing layer. sony bought grouper networks in august 2006, rebranded it in july 2007, and only ever held us streaming rights for the bulk of its catalog. for those of us watching from europe or turkey, crackle.com was a page that loaded a "this content is not available in your region" splash. i never opened it without a vpn, and most of the time i was on a vpn for something else.

so the cultural memory of crackle that exists is mostly american. the show "comedians in cars getting coffee" lived there from 2012 to 2017 before jerry seinfeld moved it to netflix. for that five-year window crackle had a single piece of programming that mattered, and a back catalog of sony pictures movies you had watched on cable five years earlier. that was the offer: a free, ad-supported version of the long tail of the sony library. years before tubi or pluto became names anyone outside ad-tech recognized, crackle had been running this same model since 2007.

sony divested its majority stake to chicken soup for the soul entertainment in march 2019. the parent company chicken soup tried to grow a portfolio of avod brands, picked up redbox in 2022, and posted a $636 million loss in 2023. on 28 june 2024 it filed chapter 11. the court converted the case to chapter 7 liquidation on 10 july. the crackle website kept loading for almost another year out of pure neglect, then went dark in june 2025.

~ how it landed ~

grouper networks started in 2004 as an encrypted peer-to-peer video sharing service in the youtube-pre-history window. sony acquired it for $65 million in august 2006 thinking it would be a viral-video platform competitor. that did not work. by mid-2007 sony rebranded the whole thing as crackle and pivoted to ad-supported streaming of its own film and tv catalog. it was a smart pivot : the avod model that tubi later rode to a $440 million amazon-fox sale was crackle's model first.

~ the originals window ~

"comedians in cars getting coffee" debuted on crackle in july 2012. the show was the rare crackle original that anyone outside the us heard of, mostly because clips circulated on youtube. seinfeld stayed for nine seasons before moving the show to netflix in 2018. crackle also produced "the oath" with sean bean and the animated "supermansion." none of these crossed over the way "comedians in cars" did. when seinfeld left, crackle's draw left with him.

~ the long tail ~

chicken soup for the soul entertainment was an unlikely owner. the parent company is the same chicken soup brand that publishes inspirational anthology paperbacks; the entertainment arm was a pivot the company had been making throughout the 2010s. it bought crackle from sony for stock in march 2019 and added redbox in august 2022, trying to bundle the streaming rights and dvd-kiosk business into a single avod-and-physical-distribution play.

none of it worked. by mid-2023 the company was missing payments to content licensors. by may 2024 it had laid off most of its staff. the chapter 11 filing in june and the chapter 7 conversion in july closed the book on crackle as a going concern. the brand is now an asset on a liquidator's list. tubi inherited the avod throne crackle built first.
