FilmStruck

2016 - 2018
dead us
filmstruck was the streaming service for people who wanted to watch old hollywood, foreign cinema, and the criterion catalog in one place. it ran for two years inside turner. when at&t acquired time warner in june 2018, the new warnermedia leadership decided every streaming product that did not feed hbo max should die. the october 26 2018 shutdown notice produced a 40,000-signature save-filmstruck petition signed by barbra streisand and guillermo del toro alongside much of the directors-guild membership. the service closed on november 29 anyway.

~ the last words ~

filmstruck never sold a subscription in turkey. it was geo-locked to the united states and the uk. it briefly added a handful of nordic territories but stayed small enough that nobody in the streaming press wrote much about international rollout plans. i learned about its october 2018 shutdown reading the variety piece weeks late, the way you learn about a niche bookstore closing in another city.

the service launched november 1 2016 as a joint venture between turner classic movies and the criterion collection. that pairing is the part that mattered. tcm brought the hollywood library that ted turner had spent the eighties buying. criterion brought its restored international and art-house catalog plus the essays and supplements it built around every disc release. about 1,800 films lived inside filmstruck at peak, organized by curator-written guides and themed double features. it was the only streaming product on the consumer internet built by people who treated film history as a continuous corpus rather than a back catalog of expired licenses.

the subscription was $6.99 a month for the base service and $10.99 with the criterion channel tier added on. the audience was small, somewhere around 100,000 paying users at the end, and warnermedia never released an official number. that small audience was the highest-disposable-income cinephile cohort on the internet, the kind of subscribers other services would treat as marquee data points. inside at&t's spreadsheet for hbo max it looked like noise.

~ how it landed ~

filmstruck arrived in late 2016 because warner home video had been quietly losing the dvd-by-mail business to streaming for years, and criterion's licensing deal with hulu was ending. the joint venture gave criterion a tcm-funded distribution platform and gave tcm a streaming product that could anchor a "library cinema" identity nobody else was claiming. netflix had already deprioritized older catalog by 2015 and mubi was a curated single-film-per-day service. fandor existed but was thin on rights. filmstruck slotted into a real consumer demand that had nowhere else to land.

the curation was the differentiator. each film had a written introduction, often with video supplements pulled from criterion's special-edition discs. the homepage rotated themed strands like "directed by mike nichols" or "italian neorealism." for a paying audience this was the streaming product you had been wanting since blockbuster died.

~ the october notice ~

at&t closed its acquisition of time warner on june 14 2018 after a contested antitrust case. by october a new at&t-installed warnermedia leadership was reviewing every streaming property inside the company. on october 26 2018 employees were told filmstruck would close november 29. the explanation was that the service was a "niche" product and warnermedia would consolidate streaming spend into the unannounced flagship that would launch in 2020 as hbo max.

the response was unusually loud for a service its size. a save-filmstruck petition gathered 40,000 signatures inside a week. barbra streisand and guillermo del toro signed. so did most of the directors guild membership who happened to be online. the petition organizers got a follow-up meeting at warnermedia and were told the decision was final. the service shut on schedule.

~ what came after ~

the criterion collection announced its own standalone service the same week as the shutdown notice. the criterion channel launched april 8 2019 with most of the curator team that had been working on filmstruck. it kept the bay-window homepage design as a visual continuity gesture. it survives in 2026, still a niche product but a critically beloved one. the tcm-only library portion of filmstruck got rolled into hbo max as a classics shelf, which over the next five years was repeatedly shrunk and reshuffled inside the larger service.

filmstruck's real legacy is that it was the first cleanly killed streaming product where the public backlash made the rest of the industry treat curated catalog as a brand-protection problem. the criterion channel exists because warnermedia could not absorb its goodwill. mubi added a us tier in 2020. tcm's branded classics shelf survives at warnermedia mostly because losing it would generate another round of petitions. the niche audience won the long game by losing the platform.
