~ the last words ~
metacafe shut down without warning on 28 august 2021. one day the site loaded clips. the next day the domain stopped resolving and no statement came out. an israeli pre-youtube video platform founded in tel aviv in july 2003 by eyal hertzog and arik czerniak, it had outlasted nearly every other competitor in the space and still ended in silence.
the high point was 2008-2011. metacafe peaked at over 40 million monthly viewers globally, 13 million of them in the us. its producer rewards program, launched in october 2006, paid creators five dollars per thousand us views once a video crossed twenty thousand views and held a rating above 3.00. for two years this was a working creator-economy model in a space that had not yet figured out monetization.
metacafe showed up in my browser around 2006, in the form of embed links on donanimhaber and frmtr threads. i do not remember ever opening metacafe.com directly. it was a site you got delivered to one clip at a time, the way youtube would soon make obsolete.
~ the record ~
| Born | 2003-07 (Tel Aviv) |
|---|---|
| Peak | 2008-2011, over 40M monthly viewers globally |
| Killed | 2021-08-28 (no announcement, domain went dark) |
| Lifespan | 18 years |
| Made by | Eyal Hertzog and Arik Czerniak |
| Killed by | YouTube dominance plus multiple ownership pivots after 2012 |
~ what made it different ~
metacafe's pitch was curation. videos went through a community-voting layer called videorank before getting promoted to the front page. the idea was that youtube would drown in junk under its own free-for-all model, and metacafe would surface only the best by filtering early. for a window in 2007 that strategy looked smart. by 2010 it looked obsolete.
the producer rewards program was the more durable contribution. it predates youtube's partner program by a year and was the first internet-video site to pay individual creators per-view in cash. some metacafe creators were pulling in five-figure monthly checks before youtube monetization existed at scale.
~ how it ended ~
the platform changed hands repeatedly after 2010. the collective digital studio acquired it in june 2012. studio71 (prosiebensat.1's youtube network) picked it up around 2015. by 2017 metacafe was barely updating, running primarily as a reskinned video catalog with rights-cleared content. the august 2021 shutdown came after years of dormancy and was effectively a domain expiration rather than a corporate decision.
~ what it leaves ~
the producer rewards model survives in every creator economy that came after. patreon, youtube's adsense share, twitch subs, substack, all of them inherit the basic metacafe idea that the platform should pay the person who made the thing people came to watch. metacafe did not survive long enough to collect on that legacy. the model did.
