~ the obit ~
hbo go was a us-and-affiliate-markets product at the licensing layer. it required a cable subscription and a provider login. i did not have either of those things sitting in turkey. neither did most of the people who eventually watched game of thrones, which is why bittorrent became the de facto international hbo distribution channel for a decade.
the service launched on february 18 2010 as an authenticated video-on-demand player, originally for time warner cable subscribers and then expanding. you picked your cable company from a dropdown and signed in with the credentials on the household cable account. that got you a streaming back-catalog of hbo originals plus a rotation of recent films. it was an idea that made sense in 2010 because cord-cutting was not yet a serious phenomenon.
hbo never quite figured out what it wanted hbo go to be. by 2015 the cord-cutting trend was real and hbo launched a second app called hbo now, available without a cable subscription, for $14.99 a month. for five years you had two hbo apps with overlapping libraries and confusing access requirements. both apps were retired in july 2020 when warner consolidated everything into hbo max.

~ what it was ~
the original promise of hbo go was that "tv everywhere" would work. you paid for hbo on cable and your tv subscription would extend to a website and a mobile app. comcast and verizon fios both had their own implementations of the same protocol, which mostly worked unless you tried to use the apple tv app, in which case it would intermittently fail to recognize your provider for reasons nobody at hbo or your cable company could explain.
~ the day it died ~
the us version shut down on july 31 2020, two months after hbo max launched. the international versions in eight southeast asian markets continued under the hbo go brand until november 19 2024, when warner bros discovery finished rebranding them to max. vietnam was the last holdout and is scheduled to flip in june 2026.
~ what it became ~
hbo max launched in may 2020 and was renamed simply max in may 2023. warner reverted to hbo max in 2025. the brand has been renamed twice in five years. the underlying service is mostly the same content with a different splash screen each time. hbo go was the first time the company tried to be a software product. the lessons did not stick.
