Kristal-Astro

brunei is small enough that one satellite platform was the whole pay television market. kristal sdn bhd out of the dst group and astro's malaysian broadcast arm launched it together on 24 january 2000, growing from fourteen channels to around eighty television and radio services by 2008. the announcement came on 31 january 2022 and the signal went off exactly two months later at 11.59 at night. subscribers were told to keep the dish and the set-top box, which nobody was going to come and collect anyway.

~ the obituary ~

Most graves on this site are one company losing an argument with a market. This one is smaller and stranger, because Brunei is a country of a few hundred thousand people and Kristal-Astro was the only multi-channel pay television in it. When the board decided, that was not a competitor leaving. It was the category leaving.

Nothing about this reached me and i am not going to pretend otherwise. anyway, the thing worth writing down is the scale. In a market this size there is no second operator to switch to and no price war to lose. There is one dish on the roof, and one day it stops meaning anything.

It began as Kristal in january 1999 with fourteen channels, and became Kristal-Astro on 24 january 2000 when Kristal Sdn. Bhd., part of the DST Group, went in with MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems out of Malaysia, the company behind Astro. by then satellite was the obvious answer for a small country. You do not build cable plant for a population that size.

It grew the way these things did. More than thirty channels by 2005, and about eighty television and radio services by 2008. for twenty two years that was what television with a bill attached looked like in Brunei.

~ how it landed ~

A satellite platform in a small country is closer to infrastructure than to a product. still, it was never quite treated as infrastructure, because the ownership was half foreign and the economics were answerable to a listed company in Kuala Lumpur.

That is the part i find worth sitting with. honestly, a Bruneian subscriber's television was governed by a capital allocation decision made about a different market entirely. Astro Malaysia spent the late 2010s losing its own subscribers to streaming at home and reorganizing around it. A small overseas satellite business is exactly the line item that does not survive that kind of review.

~ the day it died ~

The announcement came on 31 january 2022 and gave fast-changing technology trends and shifting consumer preferences toward digital media as the reason, which is the language a company uses when the honest sentence is that the subscribers went to their phones. Two months of notice. anyway, the signal went off on 31 march 2022 at 11.59 at night, twenty two years in.

The wind-down terms are the human part. Deposits came back by check or bank transfer, with a minimum of thirty working days to process. Annual subscribers got the unused balance refunded. Customers who had bought a new box within the previous year were compensated monthly for twelve months, and nobody had to return the hardware.

That last clause is the one that tells you it was over. A company that expects to be back asks for its equipment. for whatever reason, reading it now, letting every household keep a dish and a dead receiver is the most final thing in the whole notice.

~ what replaced it ~

Nothing, formally. Brunei did not get a second pay operator. What happened instead is that people pointed at the overspill from MYTV Broadcasting, Malaysia's digital terrestrial service, which reaches across the border without anyone having arranged it.

So a country's television went from a paid satellite platform to picking up a neighbor's free signal, and to whatever streaming an internet connection would carry. this happened in a market i have never been near, but the ending is not exotic. It is the same ending the rest of us got, arriving all at once instead of over a decade, and with nobody local left holding the switch.
