Batoto

2011 - 2018
dead
batoto was a manga reader that behaved decently in a category that mostly did not. it hosted fan translations and credited the groups who made them, and when a group asked for a title to come down it came down. the ads stayed light enough that nobody complained, which also meant it never really made money. in january 2018 the one person carrying it wrote that he had no will left to run it, and close to twenty thousand comics went dark inside a fortnight.

i found this name in a shutdown list rather than in my own history. manga was never my shelf, and the scanlation web ran for a decade in a language and a fandom i had no reason to enter. what pulled me in was the cause of death, because it is the rarest one in this whole archive. batoto was not seized and it was not sued into silence. one exhausted person stopped.

it opened in january 2011, run by an administrator known publicly as grumpy. the manga reading sites of that period mostly worked the same ugly way. they scraped whatever the fan translation groups released and stripped the credit pages out, then buried the result under as many ads as one page could hold. batoto inverted all of it. groups uploaded their own work and kept their names on it, and any group could pull a title whenever it wanted, including the moment a publisher licensed the series properly. readers got a real forum and a library organized across more than twenty languages.

the price of running it that way was that it never earned. seven years of hosting sat against a library of close to twenty thousand titles, and grumpy reckoned about a third of the incoming traffic was bots scraping it rather than people reading it. on 7 january 2018 grumpy posted that batoto would be closing permanently and that he simply did not have the will to run the site anymore, and named the eighteenth as the last day.

it went out on schedule. the site degraded through the middle of january, the image servers went off around ten at night utc on the twentieth, and by the twenty-fifth nothing worked at all. archive team saved what it could, which was the metadata rather than the comics. series and group pages came out, along with the forums. the library itself was never archivable and everybody knew it.

~ what made it different ~

the takedown-on-request policy was the whole thing. scanlation exists in a gap, a fan translation of a book nobody has licensed for your country, and the unwritten deal was always that the fans step back when the publishers step in. aggregator sites broke that deal constantly because compliance costs traffic. batoto kept it, which made it the one address the translation groups themselves would point people toward. losing it meant losing the only referee anyone respected.

~ the burnout ~

this is a grave for the failure mode nobody plans for. a lot of the useful internet still runs on one person with a server bill and a moral position, and that person has a life that eventually asks for its time back. there is no succession plan for a volunteer and no buyer for a project that deliberately refuses to be a business. when grumpy wrote that he had nothing left, that was the entire shutdown process.

~ what it became ~

mangadex appeared on 17 january 2018, one day before batoto's stated last day, built by people who wanted the same rules to keep existing. it inherited the community almost intact. the name had a stranger afterlife: the bato.to domain was later picked up by an unrelated operation, which ran for years under new management until a coordinated copyright action shut that one down in january 2026. the original died of tiredness. the successor to its address died of lawyers.
