AniWave (9anime)

~ the eulogy ~
the anime piracy category was not really my crowd. i watched some of what a computer engineer of my age watches, ghost in the shell, cowboy bebop, evangelion, most of it on dvd rips off warez ftps in the early 2000s or on legal streaming after crunchyroll opened up in turkey. 9anime and later aniwave sat in the layer below that, where people watched hundreds of shows across seasons the legal services would not licence. this grave is more reconstruction than memory (close enough).
the site launched around 2016 under the 9anime brand. subbed and dubbed catalogs served through a search bar over a poster grid, with a player of rotating embeds behind each title. the same shape kissanime had. by 2019 it was one of the two or three most-visited pirate anime sites in the world. by 2023 the ACE anti-piracy coalition served a DMCA subpoena naming 9anime specifically, and the operators rebranded the site to aniwave.to. same catalog, same operators, new url, roughly 170 million monthly visits by peak.
the rebrand held for about eighteen months. on 27 august 2024 the site posted a short closure notice pointing users toward legal services. the notice landed the same week the hanoi police, backed by ACE, raided the fmovies operation. it turned out aniwave had been part of the same ring the whole time. the two operators charged in vietnam ran both the movie side and the anime side.

~ the origin ~
9anime worked because the japanese licensing map is not the internet. a given season would have a crunchyroll release in the us and canada, a funimation dub six months later, a wakanim release for france, sometimes no legal option in turkey at all. that pattern created a global audience that could not legally watch the shows they wanted to watch, and 9anime became the aggregator for that audience. the catalog was deep enough that any show anyone was actually looking for was on it (or whatever it was called).
the site did not run ads as aggressively as most piracy sites of the era. mostly banner ads and a single popunder per session. no forced download prompts, no fake play buttons. that is a small design choice that made a large difference in why the site kept a loyal audience across two brand rebrands.
~ the funny part ~
the funny part is that the rebrand from 9anime to aniwave was itself a kind of admission. the operators knew ACE was moving. they moved the url ahead of the enforcement and kept the operation running, figuring the rebrand would buy time. it bought about eighteen months. what killed them in the end was not the 9anime dmca action. it was the police walking into the parent operation next to the movie side and taking the whole thing off at once.
~ the day it died ~
27 august 2024. the closure notice on aniwave.to was polite by pirate-site standards. it thanked the community and said the site was closing due to the ongoing enforcement action, pointing people toward crunchyroll and hidive. no drama. no last-message-from-the-founder. the operators knew the police had already come for the movie half of the operation.
the shutdown also took down aniwave-adjacent brands in the same wave: animesuge, fboxz.to, anix.to, zoroxtv. some of them relaunched under new names in the weeks after, some did not. the hianime brand picked up a chunk of the displaced audience through 2025 before going dark itself in early 2026. the pirate anime category regenerates faster than the movie side because the licensing gap that created the demand has not closed.
