Fmovies

2016 - 2024

fmovies ran out of hanoi from 2016 to august 2024 and became the biggest movie piracy operation on the internet. 374 million monthly visits at peak, 11th most popular streaming site by simplyweb rank. hanoi police walked into the operation in august 2024 with backing from ACE, charged two men with copyright violation, and killed the mothership along with its sister sites bflixz, flixtorz, movies7, myflixer and aniwave. the same raid also took down the video-embed backend vidsrc.to.

~ the obit ~

fmovies' peak years overlap with mine but the way i used it was casual. by then i was on ttnet fiber with a decent android tv setup and the turkish legal catalog was thin outside of blutv and netflix. any hollywood film that got a delayed release here, or a season of an american show netflix turkey did not carry, ended up on a fmovies mirror sooner or later. the interface was clean by piracy-site standards, a search bar, a grid of posters, a player with two or three embed sources per title. no download required. no rar files.

the operation launched around 2016 out of hanoi. the surface was fmovies.to but the actual business was a network: bflixz, flixtorz, movies7, myflixer, aniwave for anime, plus a video-embed backend called vidsrc.to that hundreds of downstream piracy sites reused. that last part is what made fmovies structurally different from a standalone streaming site. it was the infrastructure layer other piracy sites plugged into (close enough).

between january 2023 and june 2024 the network pulled 6.7 billion visits. at the top of that curve fmoviesz.to was ranked 11th globally in the TV, movies and streaming category by similarweb, sitting inside the same top-15 list as netflix and disney plus. the mpa called it the largest piracy ring on earth. the number that stuck with me was 374 million monthly. more than most legitimate streaming services outside the top three.

~ how it landed ~

the fmovies model was that no user account was required. no login, no email, no subscription. you searched a title, clicked a poster, hit play. the embeds came from a rotating cast of video hosts and the site's own vidsrc.to backend. when one embed died a takedown, the next one in the list still worked. the operators kept the frontend responsive and the ads mostly tolerable by pirate-site standards.

the operation ran quiet for years. no flamboyant founder, no press interviews. the two operators in hanoi did not adopt a persona the way kim dotcom had at megaupload. that is probably why the ring lasted eight years. it did not draw the same personal-target energy that got megaupload seized in a single morning.

~ the takedown ~

on 29 august 2024 the hanoi police walked into the operation with backing from ACE, the alliance for creativity and entertainment. two men were charged with copyright violation. fmovies went dark. so did the sister sites. so did vidsrc.to, which broke hundreds of downstream piracy sites in the same afternoon because they were pulling video from a backend that no longer existed.

charles rivkin, mpa ceo and ACE chair, told variety "we took down the mothership here". that was the story ACE wanted, and it was mostly true. fmovies had been the top of a piracy pyramid where a lot of smaller sites depended on the vidsrc backend to serve their embeds. once vidsrc.to went, a chunk of the ecosystem went with it.

~ what got buried with it ~

what did not survive was the exact url. fmovies.to, fmoviesz.to, all the mirrors are gone or replaced by look-alikes that are not the original operation. some of those look-alikes are honeypots, some are just opportunists using a dead brand for search traffic. the vidsrc.to embed backend is gone. the two operators are in the vietnamese court system.

what did survive was the model. no-login streaming with rotating embeds is the default piracy pattern in 2026, and the sites that filled the hole after fmovies use the same poster-grid layout and the same "server 1 / server 2" fallback logic. the mothership is gone. the shape it stamped onto the category is still there.
