Google Play Movies & TV

~ the eulogy ~
i did not open this app. in turkey the pay-google-to-rent-a-film habit never really took root, at least not for me. google play movies and tv sat in my drawer preinstalled from whichever samsung i was on at the time, greyed out beside play music and play newsstand, three icons all going the same way over the course of the same decade. by the time i noticed the movies one was gone, it had already been renamed and then finally retired.
the launch was in may 2011 as google movies, a rental store bolted onto android market. march 2012 was the play rebrand. every part of android market got folded under the new play umbrella that spring, and the movies store came out the other side branded google play movies and tv, with tv episode purchases added alongside the rentals. from that point until roughly 2020 the app came preinstalled on essentially every android device shipped worldwide, with rentals starting at a couple of dollars and purchases a bit above the itunes movie store's usual price point.
this is the reader-submission part. a note came in through the rip.so submission form on 9 july 2026, three words long, "replaced by google tv". that turned out to be the accurate reading of what actually happened. google play movies and tv was not killed for failing. it was renamed away from a shrinking brand and folded into a bigger app that took over the same job, plus the tv guide function that no one had asked google for.
the death itself is a slow dissolution. this is the third google-play-branded consumer store to die on rip.so, after play music (december 2020) and play newsstand (may 2018), and the pattern is the same each time. purchases carried over cleanly. the icon disappeared quietly. anything you had ever rented that was still in your rental window was migrated. the play brand kept shrinking around them.

~ how it landed ~
google movies opened in may 2011 with a modest catalog and a simple rental model. pay a few dollars, watch on your android phone or laptop, no subscription attached. it was the natural companion to android market, which at the time was also selling apps and books. the play rebrand in march 2012 rolled the movie store into the same storefront and renamed it google play movies and tv, adding purchases and tv episode buys alongside the rentals. the app came preinstalled on essentially every android device shipped from that point forward and stayed that way for close to a decade.
~ what really happened ~
the death was in pieces. september 2020 was the first cut. on android the app was renamed google tv and picked up a recommendation-engine ui on top of the existing purchase library. june 2021 was the second cut. the standalone play movies app was pulled from roku and from the major smart-tv brands, redirecting viewers to youtube for their purchased content instead. june 2022 was the strange counter-move where google actually launched google tv on ios, so the store expanded onto apple's platform while it was disappearing from most others. january 2024 finished it. the last remaining play movies and tv branding on android tv and on the google play website was cut over to the google tv app.
~ what got buried with it ~
the play brand itself, mostly. google play movies and tv joined its two dead siblings play music and play newsstand in the folded-into-a-bigger-app graveyard, cannibalized by different sibling apps at google over roughly five years. the movies library ended up inside google tv, the music library had already ended up inside youtube music before that. that is the honest reading of the late-play era at google. none of these stores actually died the way vudu or joost died. they were renamed until their old name did not exist on any surface anymore, and their contents were quietly absorbed into whatever brand was still growing at the parent.
