Google Play Newsstand

~ the obit ~
google play newsstand showed up on my android around 2013 or 2014 as a preinstalled app. by then i was on the samsung galaxy line with a turkish sim on ttnet-owned mobile, and every fresh install came with a newsstand icon i never opened. the paid magazines side was mostly locked to the us and a small number of european markets. the news side offered english-language sources first, which was fine, but the app never quite made the case for using it instead of tapping my usual bookmarks in chrome. that was the shape of my exposure. it lived on my launcher for four or five years without ever being tapped.
the product lineage goes back further than the november 2013 launch. google currents came out in 2011 as an ipad-style magazine reader for android, competing directly with flipboard and pulse. google play magazines launched in june 2012 as the play store's paid publication counter. in november 2013 google folded both into a single app called google play newsstand, keeping the free feeds from currents and the paid magazine subscriptions from magazines under one brand.
the pitch for the merged product was straightforward. one place on your android device to read news and magazines, syncing across devices under a single google-billed subscription that also handled discovery. it shipped preinstalled on most android phones sold globally through the 2014-2017 window, which meant the install base was huge and the engagement base was much smaller. flipboard held the reader-mindshare crown in that period, not newsstand.

~ what it was ~
under the hood newsstand shipped as two vertical layouts. the free news side pulled from about 250 partner publishers, laid out as endless-scroll cards grouped by topic. the paid side sold monthly magazine subscriptions and single-issue purchases, mostly big anglo titles like the new yorker and wired. the paid side never scaled outside the us and a handful of markets. by 2017 google was already testing a rewritten news reader internally, using the language model work it had picked up from deepmind and its own research group.
~ the fold ~
the sundar pichai keynote at google i/o on 8 may 2018 introduced google news as a rewritten android app. seven days later the play store update pushed the new app onto devices, silently retiring the newsstand icon in the process. paid magazine subscribers were migrated into google news, which kept the magazine section for another eighteen months. in january 2020 google removed the magazine content entirely and refunded the last of the outstanding subscriptions.
~ what got buried with it ~
the magazine subscription side never worked at scale on android. apple's newsstand had already tried the same shape and shut it down in 2015 before folding a slice into apple news. google's version made it a couple of years longer but the market for buying magazines by the month on a phone was smaller than the pitch had assumed. what did survive was the newsstand feed model, absorbed into google news and later into the google discover feed on the home screen swipe.
