Gemini Earn

2021 - 2023
dead us
340,000 people had money in it. gemini earn paid interest on crypto deposits by lending them to genesis global capital, and when genesis paused withdrawals on 16 november 2022 the depositors learned that the savings account had been a loan the entire time. gemini terminated the master loan agreement on 8 january 2023 and the sec sued both companies four days later. the assets eventually came back in kind, which almost nothing else in this category managed.

~ the goodbye ~

Gemini Earn opened to retail customers in February 2021 and offered up to 7.4% on crypto deposits, later advertised as high as 8%. The interface was a toggle. You moved coins from your Gemini balance into Earn and the yield started accruing, with no lock-up period and no minimum, sitting inside the same app as the exchange account.

The money did not stay at Gemini. It was lent to Genesis Global Capital, which lent it on to institutional borrowers at a higher rate and returned the difference. Gemini disclosed the arrangement, and almost nobody reading the rate treated it as a loan, because it was presented next to a custody product from a company that advertised itself as the regulated, boring option in a reckless industry.

Three Arrows Capital collapsed in mid-2022 and FTX followed in November, and Genesis had exposure to both. On 16 November 2022 Genesis paused withdrawals. Gemini's notice that day said Genesis could not meet redemptions inside the five-business-day service level and stressed that no other Gemini product was affected. Roughly 340,000 Earn users, holding about $900 million, could not get their money out.

~ what earn actually was ~

Every yield product in this cycle worked the same way underneath. Somebody takes retail deposits at one rate and lends them at a higher one, and the spread is the business. That is a bank, except a bank carries deposit insurance and a regulator who reads the loan book, and neither of those existed here.

What the interface showed was an annual percentage yield next to a balance. What the interface did not show was the name of the borrower or what happened to a depositor if that borrower stopped paying. The disclosures existed in the terms. The product design made them very easy to never read.

~ november ~

The withdrawal pause is the moment the abstraction failed. Until 16 November 2022 an Earn balance looked exactly like a Gemini balance, sitting in the same app under the same withdraw button. After it, one of them worked and the other returned an error, and the difference between owning an asset and having lent it stopped being a technicality.

Gemini terminated the master loan agreement with Genesis on 8 January 2023, which formally ended the program and demanded the assets back. The SEC charged both companies on 12 January with the unregistered offer and sale of securities through Earn. Genesis filed for Chapter 11 on 19 January.

~ the recovery ~

The bankruptcy took longer than the product had existed, and it ended better than anyone in November 2022 expected. Earn users received their digital assets back in kind in May 2024, about $2.18 billion, reported as a 232% recovery against the dollar value at the time of the freeze. That figure is an artifact of crypto prices rising during the case rather than of anything the estate recovered, but the coins came back.

I did not have money in Earn or in any of the others. My distance from it is not geographic, since the accounts were open to plenty of people outside the United States. It is that a headline yield with no named borrower behind it reads to me as a question about who is paying it, and the answer here was on the sixteenth of November.
