N26 US

2019 - 2022
dead us
eighteen months after walking out of the united kingdom, germany's biggest neobank walked out of the united states too. the announcement came on 18 november 2021, nine days after its own regulator at home capped how fast it was allowed to grow. american customers had until 11 january 2022 to move their money, and after that the app stopped opening for them.

~ the goodbye ~

N26 opened its American beta on 11 July 2019 with a hundred thousand people already on the waitlist. The bank itself was German, licensed in Berlin, so the US product ran on somebody else's charter: Axos Bank held the deposits and Visa issued the card. What customers got was a no-fee checking account with FDIC insurance and an app that could open one in five minutes, with a push notification for every transaction. It went nationwide on 22 August 2019.

Two years and four months later the company announced it was leaving. The press release of 18 November 2021 said N26 was sharpening its focus on Europe, where it saw digital banking adoption still in its infancy, and talked about expansion into Eastern Europe and new investment products. Nowhere did it use a word like failure, which is standard. American customers were given until 11 January 2022 to take their money out.

Roughly 500,000 accounts closed that day. Nothing about this reached me, and it would not have reached anyone outside one country's banking system: N26 US was a product you needed a Social Security number to open.

The thing N26 was selling had already been built by locals. Chime was years ahead on the same product with the same partner-bank structure, the incumbents had shipped tolerable apps by 2019, and a German brand name meant nothing to an American deciding where to keep a paycheck. In Europe, N26's advantage was being better than a Sparkasse. In the US it was competing against companies whose entire existence was the app.

Regulation was the other half of it. BaFin had ordered N26 in May 2021 to fix its anti-money-laundering controls, fined it 4.25 million euros, and on 9 November 2021 capped the bank at 50,000 new customers a month, down from about 170,000. The US exit was announced nine days after that cap became public. A bank being told at home how fast it may grow is not in a strong position to fund a foreign land grab.

Withdrawing from a market is more work than entering one when the product is a bank account. Every direct deposit had to be redirected, every recurring charge repointed, and the balance had to end up somewhere else. N26 gave eight weeks' notice and asked people to move their own money, which is the only way it can be done, and it is also the moment a bank stops being infrastructure and becomes a company that made a decision about you.

~ the funny part ~

N26 had done this before. It closed its United Kingdom business on 15 April 2020 and blamed Brexit, telling customers it could no longer serve them on a European license. Eighteen months later it closed the US and blamed strategy.

The brand is alive and well in Europe. n26.com loads, the app works from Berlin to Barcelona, and there is nothing on the site now to suggest it was ever an American bank.
