Dobedo

1998 - 2001
dead europe
the rooms were flat drawn backgrounds and everyone talked in speech bubbles, which in 1998 was enough to pull a hundred thousand swedes into a chat that looked like a comic strip. investor put 52 million kronor into beedo ab through novare kapital and asked for growth instead of revenue, and got exactly what it asked for. the bankruptcy came in 2001 along with the rest of the bubble.

~ the eulogy ~

Dobedo opened in the autumn of 1998 and had passed a hundred thousand Swedish users within a few months. The pitch was that you did not log into a chat, you walked into one. Every member had an avatar, either a supplied character or an uploaded image, and you moved it between rooms that were drawn backgrounds, and you spoke in speech bubbles that appeared over your head.

The first version was flat two-dimensional artwork. The later one added a depth axis without rotation, which produced the particular fake perspective that every browser world of that era used because it was the only thing that would render over a modem. It looked like a storybook. That was the point, and Swedish coverage at the time treated it as the country's own invention rather than a copy of anything.

Behind it was BeeDo AB. Investor, the Wallenberg family's holding company, put 52 million kronor in through the venture arm Novare Kapital. That is serious institutional money going into a cartoon chat room, and it tells you precisely what the late 1998 climate felt like from inside a Stockholm boardroom.

~ how it worked ~

Dobedo had a social hierarchy written into the software, which is rarer than it sounds. The regulars were stammisar, and above them sat the utdelare who could hand out objects to other users. Then there were the zappare, who could silence someone and turn their avatar into a pink cloud, which is a better moderation tool than most platforms have managed in the twenty-five years since.

The money was supposed to come from advertising and from custom in-world objects built for companies that wanted to reach the people in the rooms. Brands paying to put a virtual item in a teenager's inventory in 1999 was ahead of schedule by about a decade.

~ what 52 million bought ~

Usage, mostly. The company chose growth and got it, and never built the part where the growth turned into income. When the funding climate changed in 2000 there was no revenue line to fall back on, and the layoffs that followed were described in Swedish accounts as panicked. BeeDo went bankrupt in 2001 and the site went off with it.

Habbo Hotel came out of Finland around 2000 with nearly the same shape, isometric rooms full of avatars, and it lasted because it charged users for things from early on. Dobedo had the idea two years sooner and the timing two years worse.

~ the afterlife ~

The name did not stay buried. A modernized Dobedo turned up later at dobedo.nu, and the related starparty.se carried a similar crowd forward, though neither one is the 1999 thing in anything but name. Check them today and dobedo.nu does not resolve at all, while starparty.se answers with a 403. The original address, dobedo.com, belongs to a photography organization in Camberwell, London, which has presumably never heard of the pink cloud.

I never touched it. Sweden's 1998 was broadband-adjacent and mine was a 33.6k modem in Turkey that could not have loaded a room full of avatars, and by the time I had a connection that could, the Swedish avatar chat era was already in liquidation.
