Surrender at 20

2011 - 2022
dormant
moobeat started a blogspot page about league of legends patch notes in february 2011, and aznbeat ran it alongside a full-time job from 2015 onward. on 14 november 2022 they posted a preview of some winter skins and then simply stopped, with no announcement, because both of them were finished. the site is still sitting there today, front page frozen on that post, eleven years of riot's release history stacked underneath it.

~ the goodbye ~

Surrender at 20 began in February 2011 as a Blogger page named after a League of Legends joke, the point in a losing match when somebody calls the surrender vote. It covered one beat obsessively: the Public Beta Environment, Riot's test server, where every balance change and unreleased skin appeared days or weeks before it reached the live game. If you wanted to know what was coming, you read Surrender at 20, and so did a large part of the English-speaking League press, which quietly sourced from it.

It was run by a person called moobeat, joined over the years by Aznbeat, Uli, woops, FrostyNinja and others. The whole thing sat on free Google hosting and paid for itself with advertising and a Patreon. For a site that functioned as the unofficial record of a game with a hundred million players, the infrastructure was a blogspot template and a few people who did not sleep much.

The format never really changed in eleven years. Red Post Collections rounded up whatever Riot employees had said on the forums that day, and PBE datamines laid the unreleased splash art out in a grid with the balance numbers underneath. A decade of the game went through that template.

League arrived in Turkish internet cafes around 2012 and took them over completely. My own cafe years were 2002 to 2005 and they were counter-strike years, so by the time every screen in the place was running League i was pushing thirty and watching it from the doorway of a room i used to live in. The game and i overlapped in the same country and missed each other by about seven years.

~ the patch before the patch ~

The reason a site like this could exist is that Riot shipped changes to a public test realm first and did not document them comprehensively. The PBE gave you the files; it did not give you a changelog in plain English. Surrender at 20 wrote that changelog every cycle, for free, and usually faster than Riot did.

It is also the reason the work never let up. A game that patches every two weeks produces a deadline every two weeks, and the readers arrive on schedule either way.

~ two people ~

In November 2022 it ended without a closing post. On Twitter, moobeat wrote that his marriage and the website both felt like they had fallen apart. Aznbeat said later that she had been running the place since 2015 while working a full-time job, and that she was mentally exhausted and would not be continuing.

The last thing published was a preview of the Winterblessed skins and their splash art, posted at 10:05 AM on 14 November 2022 under Aznbeat's name. Archive Team ran ArchiveBot over the whole site fifteen days later.

~ the archive that stayed ~

The domain was expected to lapse on 12 July 2023 and it did not. Somebody renewed it. Today surrenderat20.net answers with the same front page, the Winterblessed post still at the top and the sidebar still advertising a Patreon that nobody is minding. One of the old contributors had already pointed out that even if the domain lapsed, Blogger would keep serving the whole archive at the default blogspot address.

News of Legends, the other long-running League news site, had shut down before this one did. After November 2022 nobody was covering the PBE on that cadence.
