~ the last words ~
playahead was swedish-language at the interface and swedish-school at the user base. the whole thing assumed you were in a stockholm or göteborg or malmö classroom comparing pages with whoever sat next to you. for whatever reason, i was in an ankara classroom in the same window, the closest analog around me was hi5 a little later and msn at home. honestly i did not know playahead existed until the 2026 wikipedia category dive that surfaced it for rip.so.
the site started in 1998 as hångelguiden, run by jonas frost and two cofounders. by 2000 it had been rebranded playahead. the profile page was the central object, you set up a picture and an interests list, joined teams which were the playahead version of a forum or interest group, and ran a feed of comments back and forth with whoever was online from your school. the company added a small in-site currency called playahead-dollars for joining premium teams (or whatever it was called).
peak years for playahead were around 2005 to 2008. anyway, the company claimed 2.9 million members in sweden, which against a country population of around nine million meant nearly every swedish teenager had a profile at some point. there is no version of that statistic that travels outside sweden, the network never recruited outside the nordic countries in any meaningful sense. honestly the swedish-language-only ui was both the reason it dominated locally and the reason it could not pivot when facebook arrived.
~ the record ~
| Born | 1998 as hångelguiden, jonas frost, magnus hansson, henrik weimenhög |
|---|---|
| Peak | around 2.9 million claimed members, 5.9 million logins per month, sweden's biggest teen site mid-2000s |
| Killed | march 1 2010, site shutdown after the teen audience left for facebook |
| Lifespan | about 12 years |
| Made by | playahead ab, sweden |
| Killed by | facebook absorbing the swedish teen base, business model never adjusted |
~ the early days ~
playahead's peak years lined up with the same window that produced lunarstorm next door, sweden had two large teen sites running in parallel through the mid-2000s. lunarstorm was the older one, more skews-younger, more elementary-school flavored. playahead leaned toward the upper-secondary age band with a slightly older interface and the team-based community structure. for whatever reason, swedish web culture in those years had unusually high participation rates, the country mix of broadband penetration and population density and a strong local-language web meant a single product could capture a whole age cohort in a way that did not really happen anywhere else outside of cyworld in korea.
i can read the swedish blog retrospectives now. the recurring details are the team pages, the small playahead-dollars economy, and the fact that the site felt more locked-in than other regional social networks because almost everyone in your school year had a profile. honestly that effect was identical to what hi5 had in turkey in the same years, a network that lived or died on whether your specific classroom was on it.
~ the fall ~
playahead's cracks were the same cracks that closed every regional teen network in 2008 and 2009. facebook reached sweden in 2007 and 2008. the move was generational, the older swedish teens went first because the international flavor of facebook felt more adult, the younger cohort followed within a year. anyway, by mid-2009 playahead's daily logins were down hard, the company tried a refresh that did not bring the audience back. the swedish-language interface that had been an advantage for ten years was now a constraint, facebook offered swedish translation plus international reach and the local network could not match that on either axis.
the shutdown announcement came in early 2010. honestly the wording from the parent company was the usual decline-of-the-userbase language, the site closed on march 1 2010 (close enough). user data was offered for export through a short window before deletion. for some reason, by the time playahead actually shut down, most of the active swedish teen audience had already moved, the closure was less an event than a tidying up of an account most users had not opened in months.
~ what got buried with it ~
playahead is the kind of regional site that wikipedia keeps a short stub for and almost nothing else online still references. the swedish-language internet has occasional nostalgia threads on flashback and reddit's r/sweden naming it alongside lunarstorm as the "before facebook" pair. the broader pattern was the same one that killed hyves in the netherlands and tuenti in spain and studivz in germany a year or two later, facebook absorbed the european teen audience country by country across 2008 to 2011.
in '26 playahead.se is a dead domain. the company itself folded after the shutdown. the data is gone, the profiles are gone, the only surviving traces are screenshots inside swedish nostalgia retrospectives and the small wikipedia article that brought it to my attention in the first place. honestly that is roughly the same shape as every regional social-network death from this window, a few thousand archive.org snapshots and a generation of users who do not really talk about it anymore.
