Disney My Little Doll

2016 - 2024

every date in the wind-down was a twenty-fifth. the notice went up on 25 june 2024 and the app stopped at noon on 25 september, with billing and the store listings cut on the two twenty-fifths in between. cocone had run it for eight years as disney's first avatar app in japan, and even the refund window closed on a twenty-fifth.

Disney licenses its characters to Japanese developers constantly, and in 2016 one of those licenses went to cocone, a Setagaya company whose entire catalog is avatar and dress-up apps. What came out of it launched on 1 September 2016 and was marketed as Disney's first avatar app, a claim that appears to hold. Pre-registration had opened on 20 July.

You collected Little Dolls, small jointed figures of Disney and Pixar characters, more than two hundred of them over the run. You dressed them and you decorated a magic house for them to stand in. Dolls arrived through daily logins and events, or through a gacha paid for with jewels. The official site set out four ways to enjoy the game and all four of them were things you did alone.

The content aimed well past small children, whatever the Disney mark on the box suggests. The seasonal drops were ball gowns and tailcoats from Beauty and the Beast, and an Alice in Wonderland seventieth anniversary. Every other product in cocone's catalog is an avatar app for young women, and this one sat on the same shelf, which is worth saying plainly because a Disney license invites the wrong assumption about who was holding the phone.

By August 2021 cocone was claiming four and a half million cumulative players, and that same month the app expanded into Taiwan and Hong Kong. That is the last number anybody published. Three years later it was over, and somewhere in between the operating company changed: the shutdown notice is signed by cocone ONE, not the cocone that had launched it.

The schedule is the most striking thing in the documents. The closure notice went up at noon on 25 June 2024. Billing stopped at noon on 25 July. The app came out of both stores at noon on 25 August. The service ended at noon on 25 September, and the refund window for unspent paid currency ran until one minute before noon on 25 December. Four consecutive months and then a fifth date in December, every one of them falling on the twenty-fifth at the same hour. Somebody built that calendar deliberately.

~ what you actually did in there ~

It is tempting to call this a social app, since cocone builds social apps, but the sources describe something much thinner. Chat and friends lists are absent from every account of it I could reach. The documented interaction was one gesture: another player could wander into your room and leave a smile, and a smile came with roses attached. That was the entire interaction layer, a passing courtesy that paid out in flowers.

The final events lean on that reading. In the three months between the notice and the end, cocone opened something called Memories Plaza and ran a My Little Market. Both are places rather than activities, which for a game with no real multiplayer is a slightly sad last gesture, putting up a square in a town where nobody could talk.

The reason given for closing is the formula Japanese operators reach for when they have nothing to disclose: it had become difficult to keep offering a service that people would be satisfied with. No license expiry is mentioned anywhere and no financial trouble is either. What can be verified is the ending. Apple's catalog has no record of the app id any more, and mylittledoll.jp no longer presents a certificate that matches its own name.
