~ the obit ~
In the summer of 2022 I was in my late thirties, writing computer vision code in Ankara, which puts me about as far from this game's intended player as the category allows. Disney Mirrorverse launched on 23 June 2022 for iOS and Android, free, built in Unity by Kabam. The premise is what a licensing meeting produces at full stretch: Mickey Mouse as a sorcerer, pulling Disney and Pixar characters into a parallel universe to defend something called the Stellar Mirror from crystal creatures called the Fractured. Everyone got a combat redesign. Everyone got a rarity tier.
It opened well. Five million people had it installed by August 2022 and it took 5.8 million dollars in its first month. Metacritic settled at 69 across nine reviews, which in the mobile business usually means the art was admired and the store was not. In 2023 it won Best Mobile Game at the Canadian Game Awards and the People's Choice prize at the Pocket Gamer Mobile Games Awards, by which point the revenue line had already done what revenue lines do.
By September 2024 the lifetime figure was around 34.1 million dollars. That is a large number sitting on its own and a small one set against a Disney license and two and a half years of live-ops salaries in Vancouver.
Kabam announced the end on 17 September 2024. Purchases stopped that day and the app came off both stores the same day, with the servers given a date three months out. Nothing in Mirrorverse ran offline, so when 16 December arrived the installed copies stopped working alongside everything else.

~ who kabam were ~
Kabam began in 2006 in San Francisco as Watercooler, Inc., four founders building community apps for sports and entertainment fans. It took the Kabam name on 3 August 2010, moved through Facebook games into mobile, and settled into a Vancouver headquarters with a Los Angeles office. Netmarble of South Korea completed its acquisition on 1 March 2017.
The studio's standing rests on Marvel Contest of Champions, which has been earning since 2014, and before that on The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth. Mirrorverse was meant to stand next to Contest of Champions as a second pillar. It never got close.
~ the ending they shipped ~
Most live-service games die mid-sentence. The store listing comes down, and whatever story was running gets abandoned exactly where it stood.
Kabam wrote an ending instead. Between the September announcement and the December cutoff the team pushed story updates specifically to close the arc, so that anyone still holding the app reached a conclusion rather than a connection error. That work cost money on a product already written off, and somebody had to argue for the budget internally to get it made.
~ thirty four million ~
The number worth looking at is not the 34.1 million. It is the 5.8 million from month one, which means roughly a sixth of everything the game ever earned arrived before most players had finished the tutorial, and the remaining twenty seven months produced the rest.
That curve is normal for a licensed mobile launch, and it is why the genre keeps consuming licenses. The install spike is real, the retention is not, and the math only closes if a small group spends heavily for years. Mirrorverse got the spike and the awards. It did not get the years.
