~ the obituary ~
caffeine sat in the part of internet history where the product worked and the company still died. it was a us-centric live streaming platform aimed at twitch's audience, founded in 2016 by ben keighran and sam roberts who had both worked on the apple tv interface at apple. it launched publicly on january 31 2018 with a clean interface and lower latency than twitch could offer at the time. on those technical merits it was the prettier product.
the funding round in september 2018 added $100 million from 21st century fox, with lachlan murdoch taking a board seat. by 2019 total funding crossed $146 million across three rounds, eventually climbing toward $300 million across investors including andreessen horowitz, greylock, disney, and cox. the bet was that prestige content and big-media partnerships could pull mainstream viewers away from the chaos of twitch chat.
the mainstream viewers did not arrive. caffeine kept pivoting. the early years pushed gaming streams. by 2020 the platform had moved on to music and entertainment, picking up offset and other recording artists for branded streams. then it pivoted again to sports, signing a streaming deal with liv golf at the start of 2024. on june 26 2024 the service shut down entirely with a short note saying the company had not been able to reach profitability. the liv golf deal had lasted less than six months.
i did not watch caffeine. by 2018 i was on the part of the internet where live streaming meant twitch for game footage and youtube for everything else, and a new us-only platform with no creators i recognized was not going to peel me off either of those. caffeine never got distribution in turkey at any meaningful scale. its product reality was a small audience of fox-affiliated content trying to look like a much larger one.

~ the climb ~
the founding pitch was good. live video on twitch in 2017 had a five to ten second latency that broke any interactive streaming use case. caffeine claimed sub-second latency in their public demos, which made interactive sports streaming and quiz shows technically possible. the apple tv pedigree of the founders pulled in talent and money. the early streaming demos at industry events looked sharp and the interface had none of the boxy nineties-twitch aesthetic.
fox saw the technical foundation and bet that caffeine could become the live-streaming layer for prestige content. the september 2018 deal made caffeine the streaming home for fox sports content that would not otherwise have a streaming presence. that was the strategic logic and it was not stupid on paper.
~ the slide ~
the audience never followed. twitch users do not migrate based on technical superiority. they migrate based on creators, and caffeine had almost none of the top twitch streamers and could not convince them to switch even with creator deals. by 2020 caffeine had pivoted away from gaming and was leaning on music and entertainment streams that competed with youtube, not twitch. that competition was harder. youtube had every artist's catalog and every podcast in the world. caffeine had offset and a few exclusives.
the 2024 liv golf deal was the final pivot. liv golf needed a streaming distribution partner because the pga tour controlled the cable rights. caffeine took the deal as a sports-streaming-platform play. liv golf got streaming distribution at minimal cost and caffeine got content that nobody in the united states was actively searching for. six months later caffeine was gone.
~ the long tail ~
the apple tv interface dna is the only thing that survived. some of the design ideas, the clean overlay chat and the simplified stream-start flow, eventually showed up in twitch's mobile redesign and in youtube's gaming surface. neither company credited caffeine. there is a wikipedia page and a handful of archived stream urls and not much else. the $300 million bought a competent product and a six-year runway that never converted into an audience. nobody in 2026 misses caffeine because nobody in 2024 was using it.
