~ the eulogy ~
daum tvpot never reached me. it lived inside the korean-language internet, where the dominant portals were naver and daum rather than google and yahoo, and where the local video site sat on top of a partner network of korean broadcasters and individual creators with their own broadcasting channels. the only reason i can write about it now is the archive notices from 2017 and the kakao press releases around the integration.
the service launched in 2006 from daum communications, which at the time was the number-two web portal in south korea behind naver. tvpot was the upload-and-watch layer that paired with daum's other media properties. by the early 2010s it carried roughly 270 partner channels, with cable broadcasters, content production firms, and independent broadcasters using it to stream live and post on-demand video. it sat in the part of the korean internet where local platforms outranked youtube for a longer window than they did almost anywhere else.
kakao merged with daum in october 2014, and the new combined company spent the next two years deciding what to do with the overlapping video products. the answer arrived in december 2016: tvpot would be folded into kakaotv, the messenger-integrated video service that had launched on kakaotalk in 2015. on february 18 2017 the two platforms were integrated after a 14-hour maintenance window, and the daum tvpot brand was retired. public video hosting on the old urls wound down through june 30 2017, with users given a backup window to download their uploads before the storage was wiped.

~ the origin ~
korean video in the 2007-2014 window was a different shape from the global pattern. youtube existed but did not dominate. naver had its own video product, daum had tvpot, and afreecatv held the live-streaming niche that would later become twitch territory. partner channels were the engine of growth: cable networks, music labels, and individual broadcasters used tvpot for distribution and reach, with the daum portal pushing traffic to the player. live broadcasting was a meaningful feature on the platform years before global services got there.
~ the actual end ~
the kakao acquisition of daum closed in october 2014 and the integration plan took two years to land. tvpot's traffic was lower than kakaotv's by 2016, with kakaotalk's billion-message-a-day chat layer pulling video views into the messenger product. the announcement on december 19 2016 named june 30 2017 as the final public hosting cutoff. on february 18 2017 the brand and the user accounts moved into kakaotv during the maintenance window. the storage decommission ran through the summer, with creators who missed the backup window losing their archives.
~ the long tail ~
kakaotv kept running for another nine years on top of the tvpot lineage. on march 5 2026 kakao announced kakaotv itself would shut down on june 30 2026, with youtube cited as the reason. the eleven-year tvpot run plus the nine-year kakaotv run will end up as a single twenty-year korean video-portal arc folded entirely into a successor that does not exist anymore either.
