Amazon Freevee

2019 - 2025
dead us
amazon freevee was three brands and one service. it launched on january 11 2019 as imdb freedive, an ad-supported video tier that imdb tucked into its own website. five months later the brand was retired in favor of imdb tv. on april 28 2022 amazon rebranded again as freevee. the catalog included originals like jury duty with james marsden, bosch legacy as the bosch continuation, leverage redemption, judy sheindlin's judy justice. amazon announced the sunset in november 2024 and folded freevee content into the prime video free-with-ads tier on september 3 2025. the brand lasted six years across three names and four countries.

amazon freevee never reached me. the service was geo-restricted to the us, the uk, germany and austria across its full six year run, with no turkish availability at any point. i had a prime membership for shipping starting around 2018 but the video catalog visible inside prime video turkey was a different and smaller library, and the freevee branding never appeared inside my account at all.

the service started as imdb freedive on january 11 2019, an ad-supported video tier amazon launched through the imdb consumer site. the catalog at launch was mostly older procedurals and movies that imdb already had data pages for. five months later the brand became imdb tv, the name changed but the product was effectively the same. by 2020 imdb tv had started commissioning a small slate of originals to try to give the brand a reason to exist beyond aggregation.

the rebrand to amazon freevee happened on april 28 2022. the goal was to move the service out from under the imdb sub-brand and into something that could carry amazon's name on its own. by then the originals catalog had built up a few hits, with bosch legacy continuing the amazon prime version of the bosch series and judy justice keeping judy sheindlin on television after the long judge judy run ended on syndication. jury duty with james marsden arrived in 2023 and was the largest cultural moment freevee ever had.

~ how it landed ~

the freevee experiment was amazon's parallel bet to prime video, the idea being that not every customer wanted a subscription and some content could be more valuable monetized through ads. the strategy made sense on paper. the execution kept running into the question of why a customer would download a second amazon video app when prime video already existed in the same account.

jury duty was the closest the service came to a tentpole moment. the show ran one season in april 2023 with marsden playing a fictionalized version of himself opposite a real juror who did not know the rest of the trial was scripted. it got nominated for four emmys including outstanding comedy series. the show drove a measurable spike in freevee app downloads for the spring of 2023 and amazon ordered season two. the season two production never started.

~ the inheritance ~

the consolidation announcement came in november 2024 with a target of summer 2025 for the actual shutdown. amazon's framing was that brand confusion between freevee and the prime video free-with-ads tier had become a customer support problem, and folding the two together was meant to simplify the offering. the freevee app was pulled from app stores progressively through the first half of 2025, with new installs blocked by july and the final service shutdown on september 3 2025.

the content moved over as planned. bosch legacy and judy justice both migrated to prime video's free-with-ads tier, jury duty went over with them. the freevee brand itself is gone. the broader takeaway is that the standalone avod brand inside a larger streaming portfolio is a hard position to defend. crackle had been on the same trajectory for a decade and peacock kept folding its free tier in and out of the main brand. tubi survived mostly by being the one not owned by a bigger streamer.
