~ the obit ~
in ankara i buy groceries from a101 and migros. amazon fresh was a us grocery format i read about in retail-tech coverage, not a store i ever walked into. the physical chain opened in september 2020 with a store in woodland hills, los angeles, and never reached turkey either as a store or as an intent. by early 2026 the whole thing was gone.
the physical stores were the second amazon-branded attempt at real grocery, after the whole foods acquisition of 2017. this time amazon built the stores from scratch: cashierless just walk out tech in some locations, dash carts in others. a private-label pantry brand called aplenty ran on the shelves. by mid-2022 amazon had 38 stores in the us and 19 in the uk. by september 2025 the uk operation was announced to close by year end.
on 27 january 2026 amazon told employees that every us location would shut on or around 1 february, with a small number converting into whole foods stores. the online amazon fresh delivery service kept the name and kept going. the physical chain ended together with the aplenty label. the dash cart deployments in amazon-branded stores also came off with it.

~ why the stores failed ~
amazon's own internal research reportedly found that shoppers felt watched inside the stores. the just walk out ceiling of cameras plus the account-linked cart data produced what one internal write-up called a big-brother atmosphere, and enough shoppers said it out loud that the pattern reached the retail press. the format also never developed a distinctive reason to visit versus a nearby ralphs or safeway. whole foods was the premium end and fresh delivery was the convenience end. the stores in between did not answer a question anyone was asking.
~ what survived ~
the technology outlived the stores. just walk out is still sold to other retailers as a licensed cashierless system, including at stadiums and airports. dash cart is being placed into whole foods and third-party grocers. the online amazon fresh delivery brand is still running in the us and in several international markets. the physical store was the piece that could not justify itself.
~ what it sits beside ~
this is the jassy-era retail cut catching up with the store side of the business. amazon books and amazon 4-star both closed in march 2022, along with the pop-up kiosks. amazon glow was cut a few weeks earlier. amazon care and amazon halo followed within eighteen months. amazon fresh and amazon go stores are the last big brick-and-mortar experiments to shut, and they close the physical-retail chapter that amazon opened after buying whole foods.
