~ the eulogy ~
whitehat jr sat in a category i am reasonably qualified to have an opinion on and did not overlap with regardless. i was already a computer engineer by 2018. if my child had wanted to learn to code (i had no child in the whitehat jr target age range in the 2018-2023 window anyway) i would have handed them scratch or python and been done with it. paying $60 to $200 an hour for 1:1 zoom sessions with a scripted tutor working from a franchised curriculum was not a spend that made sense to me. the target parent was different. they were an urban indian professional, often first-generation into a tech-adjacent income bracket, without a coding background themselves, and looking for a credentialed pathway that ended in a certificate their child could later hand to a college admissions committee.
karan bajaj started the company in november 2018 in mumbai. he had been ceo of discovery networks india, so he understood mass-market indian media distribution and pricing tiers. the pitch was that any child could build a commercial-ready game or app after a few dozen 1:1 classes. the actual coursework was closer to visual block programming (scratch-descended) than to typed code, but the marketing consistently pitched the outcome as if the child would be building shipping products.
the pandemic hit six months after launch. indian parents stuck at home with kids on zoom for regular school suddenly had a large addressable purchase decision. whitehat jr's annual revenue rate went from about $12 million to $150 million in five months. that revenue trajectory was what put byju's on the phone. in august 2020 byju raveendran acquired the company for $300 million all-cash. bajaj had held over 40 percent equity and personally cleared about $120 million. early investors like nexus venture partners and omidyar network hit 10x to 15x on a cumulative $11.3 million investment. the deal was reportedly initiated over whatsapp and closed in six weeks.

~ the controversy wave ~
the trouble started almost immediately after the acquisition. the whitehat jr marketing team was running youtube ads featuring a stock character named wolf gupta who was supposedly a whitehat jr student who had gotten a $150 million job offer from google after finishing the course. that ad ran in variations with different age numbers and different companies. indian tech twitter noticed. a software engineer named pradeep poonia started posting technical breakdowns of what the whitehat jr curriculum actually taught (basic scratch, not commercially useful software engineering) alongside screenshots of the misleading ads. whitehat jr sued him for defamation. the case became a rallying point for indian tech twitter through late 2020 and 2021. parents also started reporting the sales-call intensity, which multiple accounts pegged at 30 to 50 calls in the days after signing up for a trial.
karan bajaj left the company in august 2021, about a year after the byju's acquisition. by then the platform had grown to over 17000 employees and teachers worldwide, most of them contractor tutors in tier-2 and tier-3 indian cities being paid per-class rates. bajaj went on to do wellness and yoga-adjacent work, staying mostly out of the follow-on drama.
~ how the parent broke ~
byju's own trajectory broke in 2022. the company had scaled its acquisitions and its marketing spend on the assumption that a $22 billion valuation would keep compounding. the funding market rolled over. by 2023 byju's was in restructuring conversations with lenders and cutting sub-brand staff aggressively while missing regulatory filing deadlines. in february 2023 techcrunch reported that byju's had discussed shutting down whitehat jr entirely. byju's publicly denied the reports and said the sub-brand was merely being optimized. in march 2023 the top hr leadership at whitehat jr resigned in a group departure that everyone read as writing on the wall.
in july 2024 india's national company law tribunal appointed an insolvency resolution professional to take over byju's day-to-day operations. from that point on whitehat jr was not really a brand with its own strategy. it was a line item on a parent company's asset schedule going through court-supervised wind-down. teacher contracts stopped being renewed. new-student intake wound down. in may 2025 the byju's android app was delisted from google play over unpaid aws bills, which took whitehat jr's session infrastructure with it. on 20 november 2025 a us bankruptcy court in delaware entered a $1.07 billion judgment against byju's founders in a lender dispute, effectively ending any residual restart hopes for the group's sub-brands.
~ what got buried with it ~
whitehat jr had no formal shutdown announcement or farewell blog post, no townhall email leaked to the press. the platform just quietly stopped operating over 2024 and 2025 as its parent went through insolvency proceedings on two continents. that is a specific and increasingly common death shape for acquired sub-brands whose parents collapse. the sub-brand does not die at a moment. it stops being able to function as an independent entity, then stops being maintained, then stops being reachable at its old urls, then falls off the live web entirely. the domain whitehatjr.com still resolves as of early 2026 but the trial-signup flow no longer completes and the class-scheduler urls return 404s. the twitter account went silent in mid-2024. the indian edtech press treats whitehat jr as effectively dead. karan bajaj's $120 million personal exit remains one of the fastest founder cashouts in the india tech story, from company incorporation to nine-figure payout in about 21 months.
