Dunzo

2014 - 2025

dunzo was bengaluru's quick-commerce app founded in july 2014 by kabeer biswas with several cofounders. it grew from a whatsapp errand-runner group into one of india's most-hyped delivery startups. google put in $12 million in december 2017. reliance retail led a $200 million round in january 2022 that valued the company north of $700 million. by fy23 the losses were around eight times revenue and the app was throwing errors more days than not. it went offline on 14 january 2025 the same week biswas quit to join flipkart's minutes team.

~ the goodbye ~

dunzo never reached turkey. it was india-coded from day one, the kind of quick-commerce app that only makes sense in cities where a bengaluru afternoon has thousands of two-wheelers on call within a two-kilometer radius. ankara does not have that density. what i knew about dunzo came from indian tech-press reads through the 2020-2024 window, mostly around what quick-commerce looked like when it worked and then what it looked like when the money ran out.

the company started in july '14 in bengaluru as a whatsapp group. kabeer biswas would take errand requests from users and route them to nearby runners himself. that was the product for the first several months. by the time the group hit a couple of hundred users the founders had written the actual app and raised a seed round. in december 2017 google put in twelve million dollars, its first direct startup investment in india. that was the first signal dunzo was going to be treated as a bet rather than a corner-shop startup.

the january 2022 round was the moment. reliance retail led two hundred million dollars for around a quarter of the cap table, and google raised its stake in the same round. the pitch to reliance was that dunzo daily, the ten-to-thirty-minute quick-commerce arm launched in '21, would give jio the software layer to compete with zomato and swiggy in fmcg. it did not. by fy23 the losses were roughly eight times revenue. by mid-'24 the app was throwing errors more days than not. deliveries were routing to warehouses that no longer had inventory.

~ the chronicle ~

BornJuly 2014 (started in bengaluru as a whatsapp errand group)
Peakthe January 2022 reliance-led round valuing dunzo north of $700M
Killed14 January 2025 (app and site went offline within days of the ceo exit)
Lifespanabout ten and a half years
Made byKabeer Biswas and cofounders, backed by Google and Reliance Retail
Killed bycash burn against the blinkit and zepto price war, capped by the ceo walking to flipkart

~ how it landed ~

dunzo was hyped in indian venture press as the hyperlocal answer to grocery, medicine and errand-running in one app. the promise was that if you were within the delivery radius you could ask for anything a two-wheeler could carry. by the reliance round the surface area of the pitch had narrowed to grocery. quick-commerce was the story every investor deck opened with by then. blinkit under zomato was the direct competitor to beat, and zepto arrived later and took thirty percent of the market inside eighteen months.

the reason the model was so hard is that ten-minute delivery only breaks even at scale you cannot reach without spending on both dark stores and rider bonuses at the same time. dunzo tried to hold enough dark stores in the top eight metros to make the delivery times work. it never had the balance sheet to outspend zomato-owned blinkit at the same time. by late '23 the round of layoffs at dunzo was the loudest signal that the story was over. reliance had stopped answering the follow-on ask.

~ the decline ~

reliance wrote off its two hundred million dollar investment in fy24 in a footnote. the reason was mundane. dunzo was losing more money per order than any rational unit economics could sustain, and the price war blinkit and zepto were running gave dunzo no room to raise prices without losing users. by late 2024 the ceo had stopped answering employee questions about salary delays. no rescue round was coming. the story ran out weeks before the shutdown became official.

~ the day it died ~

the app went offline on 14 january 2025. no announcement, no farewell blog post, just error messages when you tried to order and a login flow that produced nothing. kabeer biswas confirmed the same week that he was joining flipkart to run minutes, the quick-commerce product flipkart was launching in direct competition with blinkit and zepto. biswas left flipkart himself within ten months, which is a whole other story. the dunzo.com domain still resolves in 2026. the app itself is gone from both stores.
