~ the last words ~
in 2015 i was still on wired in-ear buds with the mic on the cable, plugged into a phone in my pocket, and that setup mostly worked. the bragi dash was the kickstarter story i read about at the time and did not act on. it was a german hardware bet on a category (in-ear untethered computer with sensors) that did not yet have a mainstream anchor product to give people a mental model. the airpods anchor arrived in september 2016 and instantly became the mental model. by then the dash had been shipping for less than a year.
nikolaj hviid founded bragi in munich in 2013, having previously done industrial design work in the hearing-aid sector. the dash concept was pitched as an "ear computer": no cables at all, plus on-device biometric sensing for run tracking without a phone in the loop. the kickstarter opened on 9 february 2014 with a $260,000 goal and hit that number inside two days. the campaign closed at the end of march with around $3.4 million pledged from about 15,000 backers.
shipping took most of the following year and a half. early hardware issues around bluetooth link stability between the two earbuds delayed production. the retail version arrived in late 2015 at $299, six months later than the campaign timeline had promised. the reviews were mixed on connection reliability but positive on the ambition of the product. no other consumer earbud on sale at that point had the same feature stack. in january 2015 the design won a CES innovation award for the still-unreleased device.

~ the kickstarter moment ~
the dash was one of the anchor kickstarter hardware stories of the mid-2010s. the pattern was familiar by then. pebble had shipped in 2013 and coolest cooler was funding the same year the dash launched. the model of "well-designed consumer electronics funded by a coordinated crowd of early adopters rather than by a VC" was still holding up as a viable path. for whatever reason, bragi is the case that shipped closer to the original vision than most.
100,000 units by april '17 was a real number for a hardware startup selling a $299 unit at retail. bragi opened distribution through best buy in the US and through selectra and mediamarkt across europe. i saw the display units in an istanbul airport electronics shop at some point around then, sitting between the beats and the sennheisers. the box was translucent, the earbuds visible inside like specimens.
~ the fall ~
the dash pro shipped in may 2017 as a follow-up. it added bigger battery and better bluetooth. real-time translation via a paired iphone app was the marketing hook. the pricing landed at $329 with a starkey-audiologist custom-fit option at $499 on top. the pro fixed some of the connection issues from the original but not all of them. reviewers still noted dropout problems in dense urban environments, and battery life in the four-hour range fell short of the airpods, which by then were shipping in real volume with far fewer bugs and at a lower price.
airpods launched in september 2016 and by mid-2017 they were the true-wireless category. bragi's positioning as the fitness-focused ear computer got squeezed. apple did not need the biometrics feature to win the mass market. the reference customer for a $299 pair of earbuds turned out to be someone whose main use case was "phone calls and podcasts on the commute", and airpods did that with fewer failures.
~ what it became ~
bragi sold the dash hardware assets on 1 april 2019 and reoriented itself as a licensing and consultancy business, providing firmware and design services to other true-wireless earbud manufacturers who wanted a shortcut to a working reference design. the north american subsidiary filed for bankruptcy on 26 august 2019, though the european parent kept operating in the new consultancy shape. the bragi.com website still resolves in 2026 as an OS-licensing shopfront.
in fairness, this is a soft death, not a hard one. the dash SKU is gone as a shipping consumer product, the brand you could buy in a best buy no longer exists, but the engineering team continued in a different business model. that is a common shape for hardware companies who were early to a category and could not scale into it against a phone maker. the dash was two years too early for the mass market and eighteen months too late for the airpods launch to matter to it.
