~ the eulogy ~
AlphaDream was registered in Tokyo on 12 January 2000 by two people leaving Square. Tetsuo Mizuno had been the company's second president. Chihiro Fujioka had co-directed Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars in 1996, the game where Nintendo let Square touch Mario and Square handed him back as a party member with timed button presses in combat. The new studio was built to keep making that.
The first years were Game Boy Advance work almost nobody outside Japan saw. Tomato Adventure shipped in January 2002 and never left the country. Then in 2003 Nintendo gave them Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, which took the Super Mario RPG idea and split it across two characters mapped to two buttons, so every jump and every dodge inside a battle was something you had to physically perform.
They made six more. Partners in Time in 2005, Bowser's Inside Story in 2009 on the DS, Dream Team in 2013 and Paper Jam in 2015 on the 3DS, then two 3DS remakes of their own older games in 2017 and 2018. Reviews stayed good across the entire run. Bowser's Inside Story is the one people name first, largely because it let you play as the villain from inside his own digestive system.
By then the arithmetic had stopped working. AlphaDream's income was around 300 million yen in the fiscal year ending March 2014, and by March 2018 the debts had passed 465 million. The studio filed for bankruptcy at the Tokyo District Court on 1 October 2019, nineteen years and nine months after it opened.

~ the square exiles ~
The lineage is the whole explanation. Super Mario RPG happened because Nintendo and Square were briefly close in the middle of the 1990s, and that closeness ended when Square took Final Fantasy VII to the PlayStation. Fujioka's studio was the piece of the collaboration that survived the breakup, and Nintendo kept feeding it work for fifteen years afterward even while the relationship with the parent company stayed cold.
You can see the inheritance in the combat. Every Mario & Luigi battle is a turn-based system with an action layer sitting on top of it: the attack lands harder if you press the button on the right frame, the enemy attack misses if you jump on the right frame. That is the Super Mario RPG timed-hit idea taken about as far as it can go.
~ one client ~
Almost everything AlphaDream shipped was published by Nintendo, on Nintendo hardware, starring Nintendo characters. That is a comfortable place to sit right up until it is not. A studio in that position owns no franchise it can carry somewhere else, and it never gets to set its own price.
Costs moved and returns did not. A 2003 Game Boy Advance RPG could be built by a small team. A 2015 3DS RPG with voice work and stereoscopic 3D could not, and the audience for a handheld Mario RPG had not grown to cover the difference. Paper Jam is usually rated the weakest of the seven, and the two titles that followed it were remakes of games AlphaDream had already shipped, which is what a studio does when it needs revenue on a schedule it can predict.
~ 465 million yen ~
465 million yen is roughly four million dollars. That is not a large number for a game studio, and it is exactly the size of number that finishes a small one. The filing went in at the Tokyo District Court on 1 October 2019 and was carried by the Japanese trade press the same week. There was no rescue offer and no asset sale that anyone announced.
These games arrived in Turkey the way most Nintendo handheld games did, which was as a ROM. The hardware was an expensive import and the cartridges were worse, so the Game Boy Advance and DS libraries circulated here as files long before they circulated as objects, and a developer credit on a title screen is not a thing anyone reads in that context. I could not have told you AlphaDream existed until the bankruptcy notice made the introduction.
Nintendo kept the series regardless. Mario & Luigi: Brothership came out in 2024 with original AlphaDream staff working on it, for a developer Nintendo has still never named publicly. The games went on. The company that made them for nineteen years did not.
