Belkin Wemo (cloud)

2012 - 2026
dead us
belkin wemo was the smart-home line that launched at ces 2012 with a wifi smart plug and a motion sensor. it ran on belkin's own cloud for fourteen years across smart plugs and switches with a long tail of cameras and kitchen gear. belkin (owned by foxconn since 2018) announced the end of support on july 10 2025 and pulled the cloud on january 31 2026. about 27 product skus lost remote control and voice integration overnight. four devices kept working over thread via apple homekit. a class action followed in february 2026.

~ the goodbye ~

wemo sat in the part of internet history i can read about but did not buy into. smart-home stuff was a us-cultural phenomenon at meaningful scale (a wifi plug for a christmas tree, a baby cam wired to a phone notification) and turkish home wiring did not really encourage retrofit gadgetry. my own engineering instinct also pushed against putting kitchen appliances behind a vendor's web service. when wemo died on january 31 2026 i had no devices to brick. but a lot of houses in the us did.

the line launched at ces in las vegas in january 2012, when belkin showed the wemo switch (a wifi-controlled outlet) alongside a motion sensor. it ran on belkin's home cloud, where pressing a button in the wemo app called a belkin server which then called the device on your home network. for fourteen years that worked. when belkin's cloud went away on january 31 2026, every device built on that architecture turned into a plain power passthrough.

roughly 27 product skus were affected by the shutoff. switches and dimmers. plugs and energy monitors. netcam baby cameras. a wemo-branded crock-pot coffee maker that became a regular kettle. only four devices kept working (wsp100, wsc010, wls0503, wdc010) because they spoke thread to apple homekit instead of belkin's cloud.

~ what it was ~

wemo was one of the first mass-market consumer iot lines that made it past the geek-toy phase into actual best-buy aisles. it predated amazon's echo and apple's homekit (both 2014) by two years. the wemo app was on ios and android by mid-2012 and ifttt integration shipped in 2013, which let people automate "turn on the porch light at sunset" before that was a stock feature in any smart-home hub.

belkin sold wemo at consumer prices ($40-50 for a smart plug when the category was new), made the hardware unkillable in a physical sense (the plugs were rated for ten years of duty cycle), and committed to long-term software support in marketing materials. that last commitment is what the class action complaint hangs on.

~ the postmortem ~

belkin posted the end-of-life notice on its support site on july 10 2025, six and a half months before the shutoff. the company gave users with in-warranty devices a path to a partial refund. for everyone else (most owners, since the line had been sold for over a decade) there was no compensation offered and no firmware update that would let the devices speak any other protocol.

the class-action complaint was filed in early 2026 in northern california. it argues that belkin sold wemo devices on the promise of ongoing cloud service, then withdrew that service without compensation, and that this constitutes consumer deception under california law. the case is one of the first big iot-abandonment lawsuits to reach a us court, sitting in the same lineage as the revolv shutdown in 2016 when google's nest division turned a $300 smart-home hub into a $300 paperweight.

foxconn (which has owned belkin since 2018) absorbed the writedown. wemo as a product line stopped shipping. the four thread-over-homekit devices kept working as zombie holdouts, the cloud gateway flickered out at midnight pacific, and a fourteen-year smart-home brand quietly became electronic waste.
