Aviary

2007 - 2018

aviary was the photo editor inside other apps. tap edit on flickr or twitter around 2014 and the surface underneath was aviary's. adobe bought the company in september 2014, folded what it could into creative cloud, then ended support on december 10, 2018.

~ the last words ~

aviary started as a browser suite in 2007. avi muchnick and his cofounders built a flash-based image editor with sister tools for audio and color effects, pitching the whole thing as the web-photoshop the browser had been waiting for. flash never carried that pitch. by 2011 the company had pivoted to mobile, shipped an sdk, and convinced a long list of partners to embed the editor instead of building their own.

that move worked. by 2014 the aviary sdk was inside hundreds of apps with around 100 million users tapping it without knowing the brand name. jeff bezos backed the company personally through a 2009 round. spark capital led seed. it was the kind of infrastructure product that vanishes when the brand is hidden, and only becomes obvious after it disappears.

adobe bought aviary on september 22, 2014, and folded it into creative cloud as part of the creative sdk push and the photoshop mix experiment. the standalone app survived another four years on legacy support, then went end of life on december 10, 2018, when adobe removed the iphone and android apps from the stores and shut the partner sdk. integrations had to migrate to creative sdk replacements or build their own editing layer from scratch.

~ the early days ~

2007 to 2011, aviary was a flash-suite competitor to picnik and fotoflexer. when picnik got bought by google in 2010 and shut down two years later, aviary's pivot to mobile sdk became the surviving move. the company shipped a free editor sdk at exactly the moment when every social app suddenly needed photo editing built in and nobody wanted to write it from zero.

~ what got buried with it ~

the embedded-editor era. for about four years between 2012 and 2016, you could tap edit inside flickr, yahoo mail, ebay, jetblue, walmart photo, and a long tail of utility apps, and the surface was aviary's. that pattern died because instagram and snapchat moved photo editing into the camera layer of the app itself, and the moment you take the photo became the moment you filter it.

~ what it became ~

creative sdk inside adobe survived a few years past aviary's app shutdown, then itself wound down around 2020. the embed-editing pattern moved to canva and photopea for the browser side, and to in-app native editors for everyone shipping mobile. nobody really replaced the aviary sdk because the market that needed it stopped existing.
