~ the goodbye ~
the time capsule was the kind of device you bought if your laptop was already a macbook pro and your router slot already had an apple square on it. that was not my household. through the time capsule years i was on a ttnet zte adsl box and an external usb drive for backups, manual rsync, no time machine. the apple wifi-plus-backup combo was a north american and western european mac household pattern and never reached me directly.
the device launched at macworld january 15 2008. steve jobs introduced it as the natural pair to time machine, the hourly snapshot system leopard had added the year before. instead of plugging a usb drive into every mac in the house and forgetting to, you put one box on the network and every mac that joined the wifi started backing up over the air on its own. the unit shipped february 29 2008 in 500 gb and 1 tb sizes, at four hundred and six hundred dollars.
through five hardware revisions the design moved from a flat horizontal puck to the tall white vertical slab in 2013. the 5th generation matched the airport extreme of that year with 802.11ac wifi and a server-grade drive inside. storage went up to 3 tb. that 2013 design was the last one. apple never refreshed it again, the unit kept selling on the existing chip and the existing wifi standard for the next five years until the whole airport line got cut.

~ how it landed ~
the reason the product worked at all was that time machine was already shipping inside the os. you did not need to install backup software or pick which folders to copy, leopard knew how to talk to the time capsule the moment it joined the network. the panic case people remembered was the laptop that fell into the bathtub, you bought a new one at the apple store, you logged in, time machine offered to restore from the time capsule on the same wifi, two hours later you had your files back. that loop was the actual product.
the issue people remembered was that the early units ran hot. the 2008 and 2009 hardware had a known power-supply failure mode where the cap inside would die after about eighteen months. apple ran an extended repair program for affected serials. the units that survived the cap problem kept running for ten years. there are still working 2013 time capsules sitting on shelves in 2026 with eight years of family backups on them.
~ what got buried with it ~
on april 26 2018 apple confirmed the entire airport line was discontinued, including the time capsule. existing stock would sell until exhausted. there was no replacement, no apple-branded successor, no recommended mesh product from apple. the apple store shelves where the airport line used to sit started carrying linksys velop and eero boxes within weeks. amazon bought eero the following year.
the part that closed the chapter for real came in 2026. macos 27 dropped support for the apple filing protocol. time machine had used afp to talk to the time capsule for the whole product lifetime. without afp the os no longer knows how to write a backup to the device. people on hackintosh forums posted workarounds, mostly involving older mac mini boxes acting as a bridge. for the standard mac household the time capsule on the shelf in 2026 is a wifi router with a hard drive in it that the operating system cannot back up to anymore.
~ the long tail ~
the time capsule died as a product but lived on in apple's own marketing language for years. when apple announced the rebranded time machine to network attached storage in late 2018, the documentation kept using time-capsule screenshots as the visual reference for what a network backup target looked like. the brand outlived the hardware on apple's own support pages until late 2022.
the broader pattern around the time capsule is the part that explains it. apple did not sell off the router team or spin out the technology. it disbanded the internal group in late 2016 and let the product run until the inventory was out. the time capsule is the longest tail of that decision. it was the only airport product that doubled as storage, which meant it was the one people had data on, which meant the discontinuation was the one with a real personal cost.
