~ the eulogy ~
adobe premiere rush was a tool for vertical-video creators. i was a guy in his early forties writing computer vision code in ankara, not a tiktok or youtube vlogger. i never installed rush on a phone or a laptop and i would not have used it for the kind of work i actually do. the only times i opened a premiere window in the last ten years it was the full premiere pro for something a friend was editing.
adobe announced rush at the max conference in october 2018 under the name project rush before settling on premiere rush at launch. the pitch was simple. premiere pro was where television editors lived and the curve was punishing. capcut and inshot were eating the mobile creator market with free apps. rush was supposed to be the adobe answer, a stripped-down editor that ran on ios, android, mac, windows, with a subscription tier that bundled it into creative cloud.
the early reviews liked the concept and worried about the price. capcut was free. inshot had an ad-supported tier. rush asked for a creative cloud subscription. the install base grew through 2019 and 2020 but never broke out of the adobe customer pool. on phones rush was a second-tier choice. on desktop the people who needed real video editing kept using premiere pro.
adobe announced the discontinuation in march 2025. the timeline was clean. sale ends september 30, 2025. subscription renewals stop the same day. existing installs keep working until september 30, 2026, then technical support ends. the replacement, premiere on iphone, opened for pre-order on september 4, 2025 as part of adobe's repositioning around the premiere brand alone.
nothing in my own day-to-day puts me near vertical-video editing. i learned the outline of rush from the verge coverage and the adobe community announcement page. as a piece of adobe history it slots cleanly next to the photoshop mobile experiments (mix and fix) that adobe shipped during the same window and pulled back from for similar reasons.

~ what it actually was ~
rush was a timeline editor with auto-color, auto-duck, voice presets, motion graphics templates, and one-click export to social platform sizes. the file format was compatible with premiere pro, so you could rough cut on a phone and finish on a desktop. for someone already paying for creative cloud, rush was a useful onramp to the more powerful tool above it. for a teenager filming on an iphone for tiktok, capcut was already free and worked well enough.
adobe positioned rush at a hybrid creator audience the company hoped would eventually grow into premiere pro subscribers. some of them did. most stayed on capcut or moved into iphone-native editing once apple shipped better tools in clips and imovie. the strategic case for rush as a separate product faded across 2022 and 2023.
~ the long sunset ~
adobe gave rush a graceful exit. the announcement in march 2025 came with a roadmap, a replacement product on the same brand, and a year of post-sale support for existing installs. that is the wind-down profile of a product the company decided was the wrong shape rather than the wrong category.
premiere on iphone, the replacement, is built around what rush should have been from the start: a free tier that gets you on the platform and an adobe upsell to premiere pro through creative cloud once your work outgrows the phone. rush itself is dead, the brand is gone, the timeline files are still openable in premiere pro.
