The Simpsons: Tapped Out

2012 - 2025

tapped out was a springfield you built one donut at a time. ea shipped it on 1 march 2012 and ran it as a freemium city-builder for nearly thirteen years. servers off on 24 january 2025 after a september 2024 announcement. fans stood up project springfield the following march to keep the world playable offline.

~ the obituary ~

tapped out shipped on 1 march 2012 for ios, then android in early 2013. the pitch was small. build springfield, one lot at a time, with real cash if you wanted to skip the timers. ea mobile ran it as a live-service freemium property and the game turned into one of the most durable mobile catalog items ea had ever put out. donuts were the premium currency, cash was the soft currency, and homer stood on the empty lot waiting for you to place another building.

still. by 2014 tapped out had generated over one hundred and thirty million dollars in revenue. estimated installs crossed one hundred million across ios, android, and amazon fire. the game shipped weekly content and seasonal events for halloween, thanksgiving, christmas. tie-in episodes shipped alongside fox broadcasts of new simpsons seasons. it was the mobile version of the simpsons that outlived a decade of tv writers.

ea announced the shutdown on 26 september 2024 and cut the servers on 24 january 2025. thirteen years. no specific cause beyond ea's standard "we are winding down live services" language. within weeks a fan project called project springfield came online to keep towns playable offline. the archive covered around three million preserved player worlds out of an estimated eighty million total that had ever existed.

i knew tapped out from ads and coworker phones. i never installed it. the simpsons stayed a niche import in turkey for people who watched it in english. i was in that crowd but not in the collector-of-donuts crowd. by 2012 my phone was still a low-end android and the game's constant timer nudges did not match how i used my device. for what its worth. the ip pull was strong for people who had grown up on the show. the mobile-freemium loop was the actual product.

~ the case file ~

Born1 March 2012 (iOS launch, EA Mobile)
Peakover $130 million revenue by 2014, 100 million+ downloads across iOS Android and Amazon Fire
Killed24 January 2025 (servers off)
Lifespan~12 years 10 months
Made byEA Mobile (Electronic Arts)
Killed byEA live-services wind-down, no announced replacement

~ how the money worked ~

the freemium loop was clean. every building took real minutes to construct, sometimes hours or days. every character had a task list that ran on the same clock. donuts skipped the timers. you paid three dollars for a pack of donuts or ten dollars for a bigger pack. limited-time events tuned the drop rate on premium characters to keep the average player buying donuts every few weeks.

by 2014 this was one of the top-grossing mobile properties on the ea catalog. the durability came from the ip. new simpsons episodes fed new characters and locations into the game. it kept an audience of people who had aged past the show but still logged in to place their prefab kwik-e-mart.

~ the shutdown wave ~

ea's announcement in september 2024 gave players four months. no more purchases from that date, no new content, servers off on 24 january 2025. this was consistent with ea's rolling 2024-25 online-services shutdown wave that also killed the fifa 23 servers, several madden years, ufc 3, and a small stack of racing titles. tapped out was the highest-profile brand in the batch.

the fan reaction was heavier than most ea live-service kills of the same year. project springfield launched in march 2025 as an offline reconstruction of the game with cached town data. three million preserved worlds is a serious archive for a game with no official export path.

~ what got lost ~

the shutdown killed multiplayer and cross-device sync. you can still boot the cached client on some devices but the connected game where friends visited your springfield is gone. this was a game that had been running longer than instagram had existed when it started. by 2025 it was one of the last of the 2011-2013 mobile freemium boom still on active servers. it went out with a longer runway than most of that cohort.
