Adobe Photoshop Camera

2019 - 2024

adobe announced photoshop camera at MAX 2019 as a free AI camera app powered by adobe sensei. it shipped as a public preview in late 2019, hit general availability in june 2020 with billie eilish lenses as the marketing hook, racked up 2.45 million downloads in 45 days. then it sat there. adobe ended support on may 1 2024 and killed the servers on june 4 2024. all saved cloud lenses gone with it.

~ the obituary ~

in 2020 i was 36, working on edge AI in ankara. photoshop camera was a free AI-filter camera app aimed at gen z phone shooters with influencer lenses curated by billie eilish. that was not my demographic. i never installed it.

adobe announced it at MAX 2019 as a public preview, the pitch was photoshop magic compressed into a camera shutter. point at a subject, sensei figures out what it is (portrait, landscape, food, selfie) and suggests a stylized lens before you even press capture. the marketing hook was a set of limited-edition billie eilish lenses synced to her songs. general availability landed in june 2020. the first 45 days produced 2.45 million downloads which was big enough for adobe to call it a hit on the september blog post.

then the trajectory flattened. the lens catalog kept getting curated additions through 2021 but the active user count dropped past the inflection point that the launch traffic implied. by 2022 the app had stopped getting feature work. by 2023 it was a maintenance shell. adobe announced end-of-support on may 1 2024 and pulled the plug for real on june 4 2024, killing both apps from the stores and disabling the cloud lens service the same day.

~ what it was actually for ~

sensei was adobe's umbrella brand for the machine-learning features it had been wiring into photoshop and lightroom since 2016. photoshop camera was the consumer-facing showcase. the technical claim was real: scene detection ran on-device for the recognition pass, the lens stylization ran in the cloud for the heavier filters. the app could pull off look transfers that snapchat and instagram filters could not, because adobe had more pretrained weights and a larger style library behind it.

what it could not pull off was retention. snapchat owned the demographic. instagram had the daily filter habit on top of that. photoshop camera arrived with adobe's brand muscle and a billie eilish partnership and still failed to become anyone's default shutter app. the consumer AI camera category as a standalone product never produced paying users.

~ the cleanup ~

the may 1 2024 announcement gave users one month of warning. saved lens libraries on adobe's cloud were not portable. the migration path was photoshop express, where some of the lens effects had been ported but the catalog was not preserved one-to-one. on june 4 2024 the app stopped launching, the cloud lens calls failed, the help article got reframed as "thanks for trying it" boilerplate.

this was the same kill date as photoshop mix and photoshop fix. adobe handled the three EOLs as one batch, the post-touch mobile push finally cleaned off the shelf. photoshop express is the consolidated survivor. photoshop camera as a brand exists only in the help archive now.
