Yookos

2011 - 2020
dormant africa
yookos was the christ embassy social network. it started inside the church in 2011 and opened to the public soon after. nigeria was the traffic core with zimbabwe, south africa, the uk, and the us in the long tail. the social-network function faded over the late 2010s and the domain runs today as a marketplace rather than a community feed.

~ the obituary ~

yookos never reached turkey at meaningful scale. it was a nigeria-coded product at the cultural layer and a christ embassy product at the institutional layer. more than half of its traffic came from lagos. the rest was zimbabwe, south africa, the uk diaspora, and the us nigerian community. ankara was nowhere on that map and i did not hear the name until much later when i was reading through wikipedia's defunct social networking list.

the platform was founded in january 2011 by the leadership of christ embassy international, the pentecostal church centered around pastor chris oyakhilome. the initial use was internal to the congregation, then the site opened to the public. by may 2012 it was on the it news africa list of top african social networks. the platform's feature surface was the standard 2011-era social network bundle: profiles, status updates, photo and video sharing, audio clips, group pages.

the social-network function quietly faded across the late 2010s. there was no shutdown announcement and no farewell post. the domain still resolves in 2026 but it serves a marketplace product rather than the original community feed. the social network is dead in the way most niche networks die: the user count drifted down to something the operators stopped maintaining, and then the codebase got swapped for something else under the same brand.

~ what it was ~

yookos sat in the same regional layer as mxit out of south africa and 2go on basic feature phones. the difference was the religious anchor. christ embassy is one of the larger nigerian pentecostal churches and its broadcast and media arm, loveworld, was big enough to seed a network with an existing audience on day one. the cold-start problem most social networks struggle with was less severe here because the audience showed up through sermons and congregational outreach rather than through paid acquisition.

~ how it actually faded ~

by the late 2010s, facebook and whatsapp had absorbed almost all of the nigerian social-internet activity that smaller platforms had been competing for. the church-network advantage that gave yookos its original launch energy was not enough to hold attention against feeds with everyone else's family and coworkers on them. the platform did not get bought, sued, or formally shut down. it just stopped being a place anyone went, and the operators converted the domain to a different product later.

~ what came after ~

nothing built into a follow-on social network. christ embassy's online activity moved to youtube channels, telegram groups, and a parallel app called kingschat which the same media operation released later. yookos remains visible mainly as a name in the long lists of late-2000s and early-2010s regional social networks that briefly looked like the future and got compressed back into facebook's gravity well.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
